No CD need to set up Linksys Wireless G Router

My CD drive on my PC is busted. Have been avoiding buying new PC = recession and all. I bought a router - linksys WRT54G2 - can I set up without the CD enclosed in the box. I do not want to get a new PC as yet, but need to set up router to set up other equipment I need to test for work.

Please Help.

I have Verizon DSL so this will not work. What do you mean that I need to configure with PPOe?

Definitely need a new PC... but not this month.

What do you mean go to the router's set up page... I believe I have my username and password someplace.

Up until what point in your directions above do I follow until I get to the go to router set up page. I am confused.

    Sorry for being a dunderhead.

I got the CD to work and then the setup failed. I called Verizon as you suggested and it took them 2 hours to get the router working! Lord knows what was wrong. Clicking on settings and connecting and disconnecting, changing numbers.... argh. Now do I need to set up security settings? I have no idea of what to do and the directions are useless. I am not stupid so I do not understand why this is not written in clear english. In any event, I have a device that is needing a WEP key... I found something called the WPA shared key which is the same as the passphrase on another page. Is this the wep key? I am so frustrated.

Router setup
You do not have to use the cd. Follow these instructions:

Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPOe.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Yes it will but you will have to go into the linksys router's setup page @ and enter your Username and password. Verizon support will help you with that part.

PPOe is the porotocol that DSL companies use.

My Linksys WRT54G router wireless system stopped working. How can I tell if the router if dead and I need to buy a new one,?

If the lights of the router are on (Power, DSL, Internet) are on, and on of them is blinking, you might need to rest the router. There is a recessed button on the back press it for at least 30 seconds and this will reset the router. Also, on your lower right hand corner of your computer look for an icon showing two monitors click it and see what the connection says.

I have a netbook and no cd rom drive. what wireless router brand do i need to use?

technically you need no drive or software on you computer for this unless this is the computer you wish to manage the router with. you see you can still buy a new router and cable directly into it go to a web browser and type in and this is generally the default html or web interface for the router. All changes you can make with software can be done from here as well. I would think you could buy any and just use the web interface instead of the software interface. That is what I do I toss all the software and use that interface when securing a client network or setting up a router for a client. Hope that helps you out.. Oh yes default username and password for most linksys routers will be admin / admin some are different but that info will be contained withing the literature that comes with it.

Have Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHZ 54Mbps Broadband router. Bought a new desk top computer and it won't let me install the CD. Linksys tech support was unable to assist because the warranty had expired. I was...

Hi there, you don't need to install from the disk. Make sure your modem connects to your router and then the computer's LAN port is connected to the LAN port of the router. Open internet explorer and in the address line type this will connect you to the router's setup. On older Linksys routers the default username is blank and the default password is "admin." On newer Linksys routers, both the default username and the default password are set to "admin." You then can find the wireless setup to configure your router. Make sure if you use a WEP code you use the same code from your computer's wireless adaptor. Good Luck...

Wireless network using usb modem

First thing that you have to do is to check if the wireless light on your linksys wrt150N is lit. If it is, then that means that it is emitting wireless signal so you can connect wirelessly.

Then, install your verizon usb mobile broadband card on your desktop. When you plug it to the usb port, a pop up balloon would show on your page which would say FOUND NEW HARDWARE. you could click on it and choose the CD-drive to install OR you can run the cd and have it install on itself.

After installing the usb, try to connect to your wireless network. Start > Connect to > and then click on the name of your wireless network.

Cant get wireless to work

Since your ISP is new, you need to do a reset on the router. Reset involves pressing a small recessed button at the rear of the unit for about 10 seconds or more.

On the Vista PC, pls verify that it is set to Auto obtain IP add and to connect to your router/WiFi network even if the network is unsecured.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa..
