Question about Compaq Presario 2580US Notebook
Hi GDiddy, It is possible that disc 4 contains a bad/corruped file, but it's also possible that the disk itself has a slight imperfection preventing the laser from reading past a certain point. I suggest you try cleaning it and I don't mean with a soft cloth. We use on e of PerfectPlay's system's to recover scratched/damaged discs and we have had tons of success with them. I'm not suggestion you run out and buy one, that would be a little extreme, but depending on where you live there might be someone near you who offers this service. From the description loo\ks like it's not a partition problem, but the Compaq CD.
Try to partition Hard Drive using Windows 98 bootable CD.
Try to install Win XP from different CD - doesn't have to be Compaq. Later you can download drivers.

SOURCE: trying to restore windows xp
Have you tried pressing the "Pause/Break" key on you keyboard ?
How many times have you tried to use the restore CD ? And if so do you have the same results ? Make sure your restore CD doesnt have any scratches on it or dirt on the read side as that may prevent it from being read. Also you may have to select to completely reinstall the Windows XP instead of just selecting "repair". The message may be the key.
