Vista codecs? Hey Ginko, finished building new system (thanks for all your help and advice!). I went with Vista 64 bit, but dreamscene has a codec issue (I think), when I choose any of the ultimate update dreamscenes the desktop flicks them on for a millisec, then black. All still functions fine but no vid.

That happened because Vista 64 codecs are different from Vista 32 codecs.

Try downloading from one of the following links:

How to get correct codec

For simplicity depending on your Windows Operating System(OS), easiest is just to install "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or K-Lite Codec Pack" codec. These packages are compatible ot OS(XP, Vista & Win7 - 32bit(x86)). If your system is 64bit(x64), you can also download & install the 64bit version too. You can install both 32&64 bit versions together if your OS is 64bit.

Hope it helps.

Howdy I installed the driver from the disc and tried several others I downloaded from the web, still the same problem, sound but no picture. Using Vista 32. When I tried this same device on the old...

It would've been helpful to know what device you are on about however it could be a codec problem. Google for K-Lite codec pack and install.

Dreamscene,

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Based on your post, "everything including the kitchen sink" and yet... Let's try the basics:
  • is your system overclocked?
  • if yes, would your BIOS allow you to run the video card at stock/default while all others are upped;
  • could you try disabling "Enable write combining". This would be inside Display Properties/Settings tab/Advanced button/Troubleshoot tab;
  • any problem when adjusting hardware acceleration (same location);
  • can you try bunching the videos, pictures, scenes or whatever that you would want in the DirectShow in either My Pictures or My Videos (pls try both);
  • can you try running your Screen Resolution and/or Screen Refresh Rate a notch down;
  • have you tried running "dxdiag"?
  • have you tried running a Divx Player? and
  • have you tried downgrading the nVidia driver?
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Vista Ultimate 64 bit dreamscene shows black screen....

Hey there,

could i ask to see if you have upgraded to the Vista SP1? and make sure you have the correct drivers for your graphics card...ESPECIALLY if its Nvidia, they are known for there buggy work with vista, so check for updates. I dont usually find updates appealing or neccessary but in Nvidia's case, that rule is highly disregarded!

Good luck and tell me whats up after that, ill do some checking for ya!

Solution #1 is good advice. The codec pack is found here:

However be aware if you are using Windows Vista you may also need this:
