As long as the volume level from the Ipod is low, you can connect it to the AUX input on the stereo.

I can play my iphone 4 on this but it wont charge why?

How old is the system that you are hooking it up to? Original ipod docks charged through a different pin configuration that current ones. If the dock is older, it will not charge newer ipod devices.

After hooking it up to my television, the stereo shuts off after a couple of seconds or usually a loud noise through it.. i have it hooked up with different speakers, but i don't think that's the problem....

I am curious to understand what connections have you got in place with the TV. Do you actually hear the TV sound before the Stereo shuts off?

Are you convinced the problem is not on the TV end? I am assuming you have got a manual for this unit. If not you can check it out from here.

Just wondering if there is any way to hook an iPod (actually my iPhone 3GS) to my stereo (SA-AK57) somehow to play my songs??

only in stereo, there is not digital interface for this sound system, you need a 3.5mm jack to RCA lead (Head phone connector on end and a red and white phono connectors on the other) these connect to the Aux 1 or Aux 2 inputs on the rear of your stereo.

Just get an adapter for to connect from the Ipod headphone jack to a standard RCA cable pair. Jack into AUX or whatever available input you have.

Ipod input for sa-eh760

You can plug the Ipod into the mic input , to do test recording. But the result wont be great.

To listen the Ipod in your stereo you should plug the Ipod into the Auxiliary input on the stereo.

Naturally you do not need any dvd.
