Question about Projection Televisions

Distorted Color and geometry of Picture

I have a PT-47WX49 rear projection Panasonic TV that is 4.5 years old. When I powered it up yesterday, the picture came on with a nonuniform distorted appearance. In general, the picture appears to be misaligned with a blue shadow on the entire picture. In addition, there is a blue semicircular area at the bottom of the picture with a red semicircular shadow above the blue area. It is impossible to align the blue and red using the convergence functions as different parts of the picture are out of alignment in differing amounts. Finally the geometry of the picture appears to be distorted in the blue and red semi-circular areas at the bottom of the picture. My Sony TV screen has these distorted images and some green color surrounding them. Some letters on screen have double images.

You will most likely have to replace the convergence IC's and maybe a few surrounding resistors. The IC's will be found attached to huge heat sinks on the convergence board. However, if you have no prior experience repairing TV's, I would recommend calling the repairman, as there are voltage in the TV that can KILL if you are not careful.

Try to manually adjust the convergence settings through the remote first. Should it still not work, then you will most likely have to replace the IC's. Replace both at the same time. They are not too expensive. However, do have the resistors that run parallel to the IC's checked first. Sometimes that could be the issue, and not the IC's themselves. It would be impossible to say what exactly is wrong without conducting a manual testing, and hence I suggest calling a repairman.

You can find replacement IC's here.

Mainly the Distortion is the sign of bad Convergence ICs and also possibly the resistors that power them. so better to check the resistors right next to the ICs and replace both conversion ICs. this might solve ur prob..

its either the color wheel or light engine they can both cause this symptom. I would inspect the color wheel see if its brken or at the very least got a good connection as thats alot cheaper than a light engine.

Panasonic rear projection TV 47 in PT 47WX49

Camaroguy: This exact problem happened to us about 8 months ago. A board had to be replaced at a cost of $500. Yesterday, the convergence has gone on the set. You get a blue and yellow shadow on the picture. From what I have been reading, this has happened on a few TVs and it will cost another $500 or so. We refuse to pour more money down the drain so we just went out and bought a new plasma (RCA) for half what it cost us for the Panasonic 4 years ago. We have never had a problem with RCA in the past (two tvs for 20 years a piece).

I've posted this solution several times but here goes. Try setting up the convergence through the menu by accessing the convergence setup menu. If this fails to work you have a bad digital convergence box and need a tech to replace it. About $60 to $100 fix.
