The TV is a Samsung LE26R47BD A [R] (details as shown on the label on the TV). I couldn't select a LE26 from the drop down list when posting this so I opted for the closest match and chose the LE32 model. Other that the black areas being a reddish brown the TV picture is fine.

This does not sound like it will be easy. But I need you to check the model number. Samsung can not pull up a LE32R74BDX.

I have seen a close version of this problem. "The black area's are red". The panel driver pcb was bad. If you take off the back cover, you will find a smaller pcb at the top of the set right in the middle. This is the panel driver pcb. Repalce this board. I can not get a part number for you. For some reson the model number of LE26R47 still doesn't come up in the Samsung web site.

As you suspect, it might be of T'Con board fault. Check all the flat cables connected to T'Con to panel should be checked first for any loose contacts. Re-seat them once. If you wish to know more, check this site. It has illustrations of screen shots, for Samsung LCD TVs, with a faulty T'Con board. Can compare these images with your TVs.

It sounds like you have a defective LCD panel. This is more common with the plasma TVs. Are you sure it's an LCD?

This is called a dark shading error. All the LCD consumer sets have some visible degree of this effect. Some will be a little less or more than others even from the same batch in the assembly run. This has to do with the optical design quality of how the back-plane lamps illuminate the screen. The design and assembly tollerance of this area is very critical.

Normally, LCD screens don't show their best picture in a darkened room. The very black regions of the picture content may look a little washed out. LCD screens are best watched in a room that is lit, but not very bright. You have to consider that there is a powerful set of lights behind the polarized panel of the LCD display, and there will always be some breakthrough of light.

If you want a TV that is more like a CRT in its characteristics a Plasma would have been a good choice. The trade-off with the Plasma is that it does not have the picture sharpness of the LCD. A Plasma set is best watched in a darkened room.

If you have an LCD computer monitor, take a look at it in a dark room with a black screen. You will most likely see the dark shading errors. Only the very expensive production studio type LCD monitors have less of this error than the consumer sets, and they are not absolutely perfect.

the problem with LCD tvs are that they have back lamps that shine thru the LCD sceen. the job of the screen is to block the light of the different colors to make the picture. the problem is that the very thin screen can not block all the light. if the set has a back lamp setting turn down the back lamps and adjust the brightness control it should help a little. you my notice that the blacks and dark sceens look better when the room is fully lit and look much worse in a darken room.

Sony dvd player Model DVPNS78H

Sounds like the TV you are using does not support NTSC, the US TV standard. Try connecting the DVD player to some other TVs - something not more than a few years old would be a good bet, and a large screen plasma/LCD ideal as most of these are "multi-system" and handle PAL and NTSC automatically.
If the problem was the region coding you would be getting a message on the screen, something like "Cannot play due to area limitations".
