You can't really tighten a belt, I suggest that you change it, although it is extremely hard to replace a a new belt yourself. Have you checked the carbon brushes in the motor do not need changing, this could also generate a burning smell and leave you clothes wet if they are worn.

On this machine, you most likely just burned the drive belt. The old dependable care transmission design was pretty hard to kill, so just get yourself a new set of drive belts. Very easy to replace/install. You can just tip the machine back to access them. There is a lip on the bottom of the front panel that will hide the pump belt but enough room above it to unwind it off the pulleys. If you want, the front panel can be removed, early models used two phillips head screws to hold the front on or later versions used two clips on the bottom that you can release with a putty knife. Pull the bottom of the front panel forward to un-clip the top and away you go. Good luck!
This sounds like a frigidaire washer. If it is, the belt must be the original equipment manufacturers belt. ANY other belt will just slip and burn. The fact that the pulley and the belt were both hot tells me that either the belt is the issue or your main tub bearing is starting to seize.
if it smell's like rubber it likley is .. smell's like a belt driven and it needs a replacment belt & idler .. remove the two screws at the bottom of front panel an remove .. in the front center at the bottom .is the motor / belt and pump .. if there is black rubber in bottom / wala . the belt is burning . / look for pump leakage / this would get belt wet and slip.. thanks mm .
You most likelyhave burned a drive belt. Could be a couple things. If the machine was loaded to the max and a bit more, it is possible that a small article of clothes may have been flung into the outer tub and into the pump... this can freeze it up and the motor will keep trying to turn the belt against a frozen pulley. You'll need to open the machine and check the pump for blockage and change the belt... let us know if we can help with procedures.. k
you may want to inspect the bottom part and see if it still uses fan belt. it could be that the belt is loose and the motor is spinning but can not drive the transmission. so the rubber burning smell is coming from the slipping belt.
the solution is to tighten the belt or replace it if necessary.
