Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

Craftsman tractor will not crank over.

I have an older craftsman tractor 14 hp model # 917.255692. I have checked all of the safety switches and they seem to be working. I checked the main turn on switch and it seems to be functioning properly. I can jump the soleniod and it will crank. I have replaced the soleniod but the tractor will not crank. Any solutions?

I also have the same problem...I can turn the key to start...and nothin' happens....made up a jumper cable with two aligator clips and jump it to start...it could be the igniton switch or the safety switches on either the clutch or the mower engagment...I'm not too sure how to check these...thanks in advance...Ampa

You say," I can jump the soleniod and it will crank. I have replaced the soleniod but the tractor will not crank."

Do I read this right that the tractor will not crank after you replaced the solenoid??

If you can jump the solenoid and it cranks, I suspect the solenoid is not getting 12V when you turn the key.You can rig up a simple voltage indicator if you can get a 12 volt lamp and socket at an auto parts store. Solder a couple of 2 foot wires on to the socket. Put one wire on ground and the other wire on the hot solenoid lead and turn the ignition switch to start. the light should light. If it doesn't then the switch is faulty. I take care of the tractors at a large tree farm and have had problems in the past with ingition switches.

Hope this helps Good Luck Loringh PS Please leave a rating if appropriate Thks

Craftsman lawn tractor will not crank. I have a full battery, gas, oil, blades are disengaged and tractor is in neutral. Any suggestions?

there are many safety cutoff switches on all mowers today, under seat, brake, neutral etc. I'm assuming you know that you due have battery power. Some of these safety switches are common problems in others words things get bent contacts are not made and they will not let your engine crank. Do you know if you have power to anything else ? gauges show life ? headlights work ? If not
then check your fuse. If it is blown/burned I can give you more suggestions. If it is bad fuse and blows again I have other suggestions. Good luck !

Engine on 17.5 hp craftsman mower starts but stalls when clutch is let out !

Check all 3 of your safety switches mounted on the mower. Take a wire or connector and connect the WHITE wires together on each switch together one at a time to see which one has gone bad. Once you find out which one is bad, take the 2 white wires and connect them together where they're always connected or replace the switch.

Check to make sure battery is above 12.3 volts, secondly bypass the solenoid to the starter by using jumper cables and see if the starter works, if so, you sureley have a safety switch problem, I beleive you have five on this model,
good luck

Starting Craftsman model 917.270430 riding mower.

There's a safety shut-off switch below the seat, so when you're seated the switch is engaged. If you were to fall off the mower, the engine and Blades stop (safety feature).
Check the switch to see if it's operational.
Beyond that, mower may need a tune up or servicing, if it is not starting.
