Question about GE GSS25JEM Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Freezer works, fan works, fridge side not getting cold

I have a GE GSS25JEMC side-by-side. This morning we opened the fridge to notice that everything was much warmer than normal. The freezer side is working fine, the fan comes on fine, too. There didn't seem to be anything blocking the vent from the freezer to the fridge. What are some other possibilities? p.s. I don't have a manual for it and can't seem to find one online. Thanks for any help.

We had a guy come look at it and it was a defrost issue. They quoted $450 for the parts and labor to replace the defrost components. It was time for a new fridge anyway so we bought a new one. However I would like to sell the GE if I can fix it. Was $50 a fair price? Any guesses on what the parts alone would cost me?

Whip, make sure the condensor fan is running in back. It should be running anytime the compressor is running. Check to see if you have a buildup of frost on the back of the freezer panel, this could indicate a defrost issue. This refer is controlled by one main mother board in back. Check these things first and post back. You may have to do some tests on the board...Catriver..post back.

Whip, all depends on what they were charging you for. Usually the heater assy. is what fails on the defrost for this unit. It's a glass heater, you can see it here.http://www.repairclinic.com/0080.asp

It's usually not necessary to change out the board if just the heater failed. Tests can be made on this board to determine that. The bimetal for this defrost is only a back-up incase the evaporator thermistor fails to end the defrost. So in your case, without being there, could be a 5.00 thermistor and a 49.00 heater. Did the service company do any tests on the board? If it was a GE technician, he should know his business...Catriver..post back.

Most likely, if you can hear the compressor running, the fan inside the freezer is not working. When the compressor is running, open the freezer and listen for the fan running. If you don't hear it, locate it and, with a voltmeter, test for voltage across the terminals. If you have voltage present, replace the fan. You can buy replacement fans at a local appliance parts store, internet parts suppliers, even ebay.

FRIG DOEN'T GET COLDER THAN 49, WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM,FREEZER WORKS GREAT (GE PROFILE) ABOUT 2 YEARS OLD-

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp control. Make sure the fan is running when the compressor runs. Make sure the vent(damper) opens and closes as you adjust the fridge temp control.

Fridge and freezer not getting cold

  • You have 2 fans Make sure your top fan is working ,its located inside the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked. With out a fan you have no circulation .Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open 12 to 24 hrs this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.
