Question about Sharp Actius AL27 Notebook

1 Answer

USB Ports on AL27 only work with printer and external hard drive.

The USB ports worked great until I got hit with a virus. A local computer store had to reload Windows XP Home Edition. The computer works well, except for the fact the USB ports no longer function as they used to. The ports now allow me to plug in an external hard drive and my printer; but the ports don't recognize either a wireless mouse or a mouse pluged into the lap top on a USB Port. Is there a way to fix the ports so that they recognize the mouse? Sharp AL27.

I fixed the problem by going to "Device Manager," then to the "Universal Bus". Under "Universal Bus" are a list of the individual USB ports. You have to delete each one individually. When you delete each one, a window opens up which gives you various headers; select "drivers" and hit "uninstall". When you hit "uninstall", windows will ask if you want to proceed. Select "Yes". You'll then get a "warning" that the computer may not work correctly if do this procedure. You want to proceed with the deletion of each Universal Bus port. Once you've removed the Universal Bus ports, then reboot windows. Windows will detect the individual Bus ports and find new drivers for them. Once the drivers are installed (automatically by Windows), the USB ports will be operational.

have you dropped it? it could be any number of disc errors, two of the most common errors are caused by viruses and dropping. try putting the hard drive in the freezer for a day or so in a moisture and static resistant bag. just a possibly remedy, if that doesn't work, try removing the casing on the hd and setting it as a secondary drive after you plug it inside a desktop computer.

My imation 320 gb 2.5 inch external hard disk cannot readby my laptop, but when i try it in some laptop my external is working there

Either the USB ports on your computer are not working
(try some other USB device in those ports to disprove this)
or the USB ports are supplying insufficient voltage/amperage to your Imation device,
such that it does not operate.

My computer does not recognize the external hard drive so I cannot access any information that has been stored to the drive.

Hello,

The problem you're experiencing can have several causes.

Generally the problem lies within the the drive enclosure or the drive itself but can ocassionaly be a driver related issues with your computer.

I'll give you a few steps to try, if they work you're off and rocking. If they don't you may be beyond DIY tips but there's always the option of seeking a pro. Either way we'll give you the right advice.

Step one, plug the drive into a different computer. If it works the problem is in your computer, try a different pair of USB ports, this is important as each USB Hub controls a pair of USB ports. If the drive works on another computer but doesn't work on any of your USB ports, reply back and I'll work through that solution with you.

Step two, if it doesn't work on another computer, that serves as reasonable proof the issue is within the drive enclosure. Take the drive to your local PC shop, ask the technicians to extract the harddrive and install it in a new enclosure. If it works in the new enclosure, buy the enclosure, thank them for their time and you're ready to roll.

If it still fails to respond, the issue is in the actual harddrive. This is the point where you will need a pro to assist you. I have had great luck with Armor-IT in Canada, they are the least expensive for most types of recovery and faster than most other facilities. you can get in touch with them through their website www.aitsavemyfiles.com .

Let me know how you make out either way, if you have any followup questions please comment back into this artical as it keeps it easier for me to track your questions.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Device cannot work

Try cleaning your computer for spyware and viruses. Also try cleaning your registry out using a utility. Do your USB ports on the computer work with any other devices? Try using different USB ports and make sure theres no faults in you device list with the USB drivers. Let me know more info. What OS are you using. By unplugging it without safely removing is most dangerous to Flash memory but it's definitely possible to damage a hard drive by doing so. You might have corrupted your drive. Hope this helps.

Computer won't recognize the store-it drive external hard drive

You may have a problem with your drive or the usb ports so we need to check both. The green light usually just means the device is getting power.

The first thing to do is unplug the drive and reboot the computer. Make sur eit has finished booting up completely. Then plug it into a different usb port NOT the same one. If it detects and works it was just the operating system or motherboard not recognizing whats called a legacy usb device.

Next we want to try a different usb device in the computer to make sure the ports are working.

And we want to try the drive in another computer to make sure it is working.

At this point you will know if the problem is your drive or the port. If it is the drive you can get it runnning again sometimes by taking the actual drive out an dputting it into a new external drive enclosure kit.

What can I use the 2 USB ports on the stand for?

This is a simple HUB that has two type A receptacles and one type B receptacle; you use a printer style plug to connect the Type B receptacle into an available USB port on your computer. Then one port becomes two. It's not a powered hub from what I can see (the ports are on the base, which isn't wired to the monitor, so no power), so that rules out most external hard drives. I don't know of any monitors that use USB for anything, but printers, flash drives, cameras, and the standard small gadgets should work fine on it.

External hard drive problem

The problem is that the printer, being a composite device, takes a lot of energy from the computer USB ports. Some computers, such as some Dell computers, have problems with USB ports due to a cheap manufacturing. What I can suggest you is to simply unplug the printer when you want to use the HDD, because no matter what you do, you'll have the same problem and that's because of the computer that won't supply enough power to the USB ports.
Also, if you are using a laptop, remember to keep it plugged to the power so it can provide more energy to the USB ports.

Is my hard broken before i have got a chance to even use it?

However rare, it is possible that you have a dead hard drive. I would try the hard drive on a different computer (one that has a known good set of USB ports). If that still does not work, take it back to where you got it and get a refund/replacement.

A couple of things you can look at:

1) Do you hear/feel the hard drive "spin-up" when you first turn it on ?

2) Does the hard drive come with an external power supply ? If so, it could be just the power supply that is shot. Check for tell-tale LEDs that would say whether it's working or not.

3) Have you tried different USB cables/USB ports ? Sometimes the front ports do not have enough juice to power a hard drive (if it's drawing power off the USB port). Sometimes switching to a USB port on the back of your computer is enough to solve the problem.

4) Make sure to eliminate as many superfluous components you can from your testing: don't plug the hard into a USB hub, plug it directly into an motherboard USB port (as mentioned above, the ones on the back).

Hope this helps.
