Not making Ice

I posted a question earlier about my freezer not freezing and water not working. I followed the advice of unplugging and letting it sit with the doors open for a few days. However, when I pluged it back in the icemaker is not working. The freezer seems to be working and the water is working. But, there is no ice in the bucket and I don't hear the water filling into the ice tray. Can you help?

Letting it defrost was probably suggested in case the fill line was froze up. To make ice the freezer section must be 17 degrees or colder (colder is better) and of course water must be getting to the valve with the valve working to put water in. Can you hear the water valve solenoid "click" when it tries to fill the tray? If the water valve is clicking on for a few seconds during a fill cycle and no water comes out you would have to check all your water system to see where the stop is. I would suspect the motor module isn't working if no fill cycle, etc. is even trying to run. Pull the square plastic cover off the end of the ice maker and you should see a large gear and a small gear. Press on the large gear a little to see if you can make the electrical contacts make a connection under the gear. Also check that the little tabs that hold the gear on are not broken allowing the gear to come off, etc. The little fingers in the ice tray should be at about the 2 o'clock position when in "park", if the fingers are any other position the motor module is likely dead. Sometimes pressing on the large gear a little will make the electrical contact better and it will S L O W L Y start turning, if this happens it will run normal and start making ice again but eventually will fail the same way. Check these things and let us know how it goes. I've put a link on so you can see the parts and order if you need to.

Kenmore Model 78862891 freezer defrost drain keeps freezing up every month.

It can be issue with water valve its clogged and not letting the water to stop running and that is causing the overflow of water and that is getting freezed and then clogged.

Ice accumulation at defroster drain hole

You can usually clean them out from the inside of the freezer.I use a piece of plastic tubing to run down them. You can also use a piece of wire as long as it doesn't have a sharp end that might damage the tube. You can remove the cover from the back of the fridge and you will see the tube coming out of the cabinet going to the drain pan. Post back if you need further help.

Why are only drawers in fridge cold & not making ice?

Contact a professional. Sounds like either your damper door is not operating correctly and not letting enough cool air from the freezer enter, or there is an air leak that is making ice form .

No water being delivered to the ice maker tray . Water in the door works, new water filter. Tried disconnecting power for 5 mins. Can the water intake freeze. Should I let the freezer defrost ???

There is a tube that feeds the icemaker if you follow the water line from the inlet valve up the back of fridge and remove full tube you can see any ice buildup or try these.

There are only 3 things that will prevent an icemaker from not making ice.

1) Temperature in freezer. Most icemakers require that the temp in the freezer is at a minium of 6 degrees. If the thermostat in the icemaker is not reading this temp or below it will not let the icemaker call for water to make ice.

2) Icemaker. Is the arm on the icemaker in the correct position. Most models the arm should be down to operate and up to be off. Faulty icemaker. The internal components of the icemaker may have went out.

3) Water inlet valve. If the silinoid for the icemaker on the inlet valve is stuck it will not allow water to the icemaker. Over time inlet valves wear out.

Troubleshooting- Check the temp in freezer. If not 6 degrees or below you have another problem with your freezer. If at 6 degrees or below and you have ice and water through door unplug fridge, switch the two hoses from the inlet valve (NOT Possible on all inlets so check to make sure you can remove the hoses by pushing in on the cylinder that hose feeds into and pulling hose out) Switch the hoses than press the water through door feature. If you get water inlet valve is good. If you dont have ice and water though door than have your inlet valve tested. If inlet is good and temp is good replace icemaker. No water going to the ice maker

You could have either the ice maker causing this or the side of the water control valve that feeds the ice maker is defective. Here is a simple test to see which is causing the problem. Fill ice maker with tap water. If after the water freezes the cubes drop into the ice bin then the water does not refill it will need the dual water control valve replaced. If ice just sits there then the ice maker needs to be fixed or replaced depending on your Maytags model number. Let me know the model number and results, Thanks, Sea Breeze

You probably have one of the following problems: A failed defrost system, meaning the defrost timer and/or element has gone out and your evaporator coil is frozen over; you are low on freon and this too will cause your evap coil to freeze over until the freon drops so low all cooling stops; . Unless you have gauges, a licence to buy freon and service valves (or a buddy with such) you are limited to what you can do. Here is my advice:1. unplug the frig and let it defrose over night, or unplug the frig and empty the freezer to remove the back cover to look for ice, a frozen fan and if so get your hair dryer out and melt the ice so you can test the fan and the defrost element (you will need a volt/ohm meter to do the element check. You can do it.

Icetube leaking water inside freezer and outside back of freezer

Your refrigerator needs a new water valve and possibly some new water tubing. You can find the correct part by going to and entering the refrigerator's model number in the parts search field. When you have the valve, shut off the water to the refrigerator. If you're not sure how to do that, just shut off water to the entire house. Be sure to run the kitchen sink after you shut the water off to relieve any presure and double check that the water is completely shut off.

Be sure to unplug the refrigerator before you start this project...water and electricity aren't friends! Using a 1/4" nut driver or socket, remove the cardboard or metal cover off the back of the refrigerator. Follow the water line to the water valve, unscrew the nut going to the valve, and remove the water line. There are 2 screws holding the water valve to the refrigerator cabinet; remove the screws and gently pull the valve out. Unplug the electrical connectors and remove the water lines. Take the new valve, connect the water lines and electrical plugs, screw the valve back into place, attach the water line and turn the water back to to test for leaks.

Since the valve has been leaking inside your freezer it would be a great idea to clean out your freezer and let the water tube and lines thaw. Find a place for your frozen food, unplug the unit and let it sit overnight with the doors open. Don't forget to remove the ice bin, as these make quite the mess when the ice melts. Once it's thawed, plug it back in, make sure the water is on and not leaking and enjoy!

Found in the FAQ section on
Samsung refrigerator freezers produce about 120 cubes per day, which is in line with most manufacturer specifications.
Empty the ice tray and let the unit run for 24 hours.
If fewer than 50 cubes are produced during the 24-hour test, then your refrigerator requires service. Please contact Samsung Service at 1-800-SAMSUNG to schedule a service appointment.
If your freezer is producing 50 to 90 cubes per day, try the following:
  • Set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting. Freezer temperature must be 5 degrees Fahrenheit or less for the ice maker to work properly.
  • Make sure that the water valve on the refrigerator water supply line is completely open. You can find the water valve where the refrigerator water supply line taps into your house water line.
  • If you have a water filter in your refrigerator, change the filter cartridge. For instructions, see your Users Manual.
If you want your freezer to produce more than 120 ice cubes in a day, try the following:
  • An ice maker typically makes 1 tray of ice every 90 minutes. To shorten the amount of time the freezer takes to produce a tray of ice, set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting.
  • If your refrigerator has a Power Freeze function, press the Power Freeze button to speed up the ice making process. In the Power Freeze mode, both the compressor and the freezer fan run for 10 hours continuously. The ice making interval is reduced from 90 minutes to 55 minutes. If the ice bucket fills in less than 10 hours, Power Freeze stops automatically.
NOTE: If you have just installed your refrigerator, it will take 6 to 12 hours for the refrigerator to produce ice.
You should throw away the first three batches of ice cubes that the ice maker produces (approximately 30 cubes) to ensure the ice maker is making ice from clean water.

Ice maker freezing up

If it is only the fill tube that is freezing up, or getting full of ice, than your water valve is leaking (letting drops of water thru to your ice maker and filling the icemaker fill tube up and freezing). If this is the case, replace the dual water valve (part # 1071263) located in the back of the refrigerator, just follow the water line from your wall into the refrigerator. Make sure you turn off the water to the refrigerator and also unplug it. The dual water valve is the one that has two water lines, one going to the icemaker and one going to the water dispenser. On this model, I think you only have one water valve. On some you have two, the primary water valve and a secondary water valve (the dual valve). If this is your case, I would highly recommend you replace both. As far as the Refrigerator side freezing things up, I think that is a whole different issue. Please post back.
