My IBM is about the same as yours and did the same thing. It turned out to be a CPU Cooling Fan. When you turn the laptop on, try to look in the air outlet port and see if the fan is turning. Another possibility is lint and dirt around the fan. The unit has a temperature sensor that will shut the machine down on a "Hot CPU" signal.
1. You must have a processor compatible with motherboard, an Intel Pentium 4M 2.2GHz P/N 91P7209. 2. Download and read pages 81 to 86 and above from the Hardware Maintenance Manual: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-42308 3. Pay close attention to reinstall the fan assembly and apply thermal compound if necessary. 4. Re-assemble all the parts again by following the steps in reverse order of the manual.
NOTE: For future reference, your laptop will change to a 2366-FBx, M6x or 2367-FBx model depending on case.
