My system cannot playback sound

I have a dell INSPIRON 4100 PC notebook.
i cannot play back any sound.
sometimes if the sound comes on(which hardly happens), it will play for a while (about 2-5 minutes) then it will make some SCRATCHY sound and then it will stop playing back sound.
i have downloaded and installed the sound driver -Crystal WDM version 6.13.10.1947 from dell website.
if i check the sound codec in Device Manager, I see a yellow exclamation mark on the Crystal WDM audio codec.
if i check the device status i see a message saying: the device cannot start(Code 10).

please help me out. Thank you.

What solution because dell notebook blank display after reboot

If the Dell logo comes up on the screen and goes to blank display, the problem is in the hard drive or windows files have been corrupted, remove the hardware and reseat it back in place, sometimes this will restart it, if no change! reload your operational system with the disc if available to factory setting. If none of these work the hard drive needs to be assessed for replacement.

When you insert a DVD the drive is not reconized cant watch movies or play cds. On my DELL Inspiron

Recommend you go under Control Panel settings and look at System Settings and Devices tab. Look at the hardware list and verify there is no issue with drivers for the DVD drive (should be flagged if there is issue). May need to reinstall or get updated drivers possibly if hardware recognized, but not functioning.

Piercing, loud alarm when starting Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop

Most likely, the CPU cooling fan, as the system doesn't really start generating any heat until the windows video initializes. If you have the resource CD, run the diagnostic for the fan, see if the noise occurs during the test.

How do i make the speakers on my dell inspiron 4100 work?

Very general question, but check the soundcard (are drivers installed), codecs for the files you are trying to play. Or look for Fn+F1toF12 combo, which may mute/unmute.

Not enough video memory

The Inspiron 4100 has a 16MB video card built in to the motherboard. It is not upgradable. It appears that the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the program, so you'll have to get a more powerful system to run that application. sorry =(

My speakers do not work anymore in my inspiron 2200

If you press Fn while powering the system on it should enter diagnostic mode. It will perform some memory tests and then present a video test screen at which point it plays sound through the speakers. If you here this sound, then your hardware is functioning and it is a software problem. There are USB sound cards available - note: you would need external speakers as well.
