Samsung 933HD TV - Sound Switches On Automatically

I recently purchased a Samsung 933 HD TV as a bedroom TV. The problem I have is that, for no apparent reason the sound (not picture) switches on for about 20 seconds then turns off. This can happen anytime of day or night.
Thinking this is a manufacturing fault with the particular TV I purchased, I took it back to the shop and swapped it for another (same make/model) but to my astonishment the new TV did exactly the same.
Does anyone have any information? I can take it back to the shop within one month and receive a full refund or swap it for another make, but apart from this fault it's a very good TV and I would like to keep it.
Thanking you in anticipation.

I have the exact same problem with my Samsung LA40R81BDX

  • Anonymous Nov 20, 2008

    Mine does the same.

I was told by Samsung UK that this is a known problem and they will swap the TV for another with a firmware fix applied. They sent me a another TV (3rd) but the problem still remains. They are going to send another (4th) TV to me. If this has the problem they will issue me with a credit note for a full refund.

Will let you know the outcome.

I have the same probem and was about to return to Argos, please let me know the outcome. Thanks

  • Alan Evans Nov 27, 2008

I have had the new TV 24 hours now and so far had no problems(touch wood). Unfortunately I did not take note of the previous TV's firmware address. Northism, I would be interested to know if your F/W version is different from mine. The F/W version for my latest TV is T-EMMA2DEUB-0106.

This can be found by pressing D-MENU > SET-UP > SYSTEM > PRODUCT INFORMATION.

  • Alan Evans Nov 27, 2008

Northism have a look at the reviews on Argos' website... some have the same problem.

  • Alan Evans Nov 28, 2008

48 hours later the 4th TV sound switched itself on again.

    I give up!...

I have taken the TV back to Argos and received a full refund.

Thank you Argos, your customer service staff were very helpful. I wish I could say the same for the "experts" at Samsung UK.

The make and model of this TV is Samsung Sync Master 933HD (LS19CFEKF/EN) I think there is a fundamental fault in the model having had 4 of them. My recommendation is DON'T BUY IT.

Same problem- I am now on my way to return it to Argos

  • Alan Evans Jan 02, 2009

Hello, It's me again. I started this....

Re GraemP... As I stated above I have had 4 of these TV's, 1st from Argos, 2nd replaced by Argos, 3rd and 4th replaced by Samsung. All had the same problem. Samsung said they needed a firmware update, but they were unable to tell me if the ones they had sent me had the upgrade. I had a 30 day money back guarantee from Argos and was running out of time so I just took the last replacement back to Argos and received a full refund.

I did not need it, but I had a second plan to get my money back... I escalated the problem by insisting on speaking to a supervisor at Samsung and was told that if they replace the TV twice and the problem persists it is their policy to reimburse you with a full cash refund.

Re Renkajay with no receipt you my want to try this.

PS I have since purchased a Samsung LE19R88BD 19" LCD .... Smashing little set with no problems at all.

    Good Luck!!

Same problem. Sound only (no blue light) comes on for 8 seconds exactly 45 minutes into standby every time. Standby sound shortly after then no further problem until next time it goes into standby. Unable to find firmware version - nothing on menu under set-up.

Comet engineers coming round to inverstigate but don't hold out much hope.

Same problem. Sound only (no blue light) comes on every time exactly 45 minutes into standby. It stays on for 8 seconds then goes off followed by standby mode sound. No further problems until next on/off cycle.

Unable to try solution above as no "System" option in set-up menu.

Seems like the auto upgrade in standby mode feature was the culprit.

Switching this off from D MENU>SET-UP>SYSTEM>SOFTWARE UPGRADE did the trick.

BTW my firmware version is T-TMDEUC-1003

This happened to me, i thought about taking the TV back, but I quite like it as otherwise it is a fantastic little set for the price.

Anyway, back to the point. It seems that (for me anyway), the automatic firmware update is causing the problem. You need to disable it.

To do this:

Press Menu
Go down to the third icon that looks like a cog?
Select system
Select Software upgrade
change Standby Mode upgrade to Off

and good luck!

sods law sais that it wont work, but I haven't seen/heard a problem for the past few days I made the change.

the only downside is that you may need to occasionally check for upgrades.

I was told the same from Samsung that it was a firmware issue, when the TV tries to check for new S/W it will partially power up. I told Samsung i was not prepared to accect a replacement TV from the warehouse just 2 weeks after buying it. It is a fantastic TV so was worried i would have to try and find another bargain!
I decided to disable the automatic S/W update and so far so good! Really disappointing service from Samsung - even though it was an out of box failure they weren't prepared to replace it for a new one.

I've just got off the phone to Samsung Support as I had the exact same problem.
I've yet to be convinced that the following advice from Samsung will fix the problem but it's looking good so far:

While in Analogue TV mode, press the MENU button. If the picture mode is "SHOP" then you have the problem. In this mode the TV will do things all on it's own - the most annoying being:

1) not remembering change of settings
2) the sound comes on when the TV is switched off.

Go into setup and start the Plug and Play set up. When you are asked if you want SHOP or HOME mode, select HOME mode. You do not need to go through the rest of the set up so press "Skip" (MENU) for the remaining plug and play setup options.

To check you are in HOME mode select Analogue TV mode and hit MENU again. If the picture mode is not SHOP you are OK.

The reason I'm concerned that this is not a long term fix is that I am *sure* that when I originally set the TV up, I selected HOME mode not SHOP mode. So my questions are

1) how did it revert to SHOP mode
2) will is revert to SHOP mode again

Forget the solution I posted - as I suspected, the advive from Samsung was wrong. I've called them again because the I still have the problem. They have advised me to return it to Comet and exchange it. I'd love to do this but as I pointed out to the Support guy, it's a waste of time unless I know when the problem was fixed (IE, from which serial number / Software level / Firmware level). It would be pointless to exchange it with one with the same fault!

    My advice - don't buy this TV/Monitor.

I am trying to retune my mother-in-law's tv, and don't have a manual. If I go into the menu, and try and open the "Satellite dish" icon - it won't let me. The curser just goes past it.

Sometimes, the manufacturer removes the user manual from their website in the case of older device models. If this is the case with the Samsung 933HD, you can find a backup here:

We have a samsung 933hd. when we switch on, we get a picture and sound but lose picture after 1 second. Can't get anything on screen even using remote. Switch off then back on and same again , sound ok but...

This is a power supply problem. If the set is under warranty, exchange it.

If you warranty is expired, you can take it to a repair shop and get an estimate to see if it is worth fixing.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 933 HD TV that we are using for a video hookup. We have plugged the white and red RCA jack into the back but did not get a picture. Does this TV have to be on a certain channel...

The white and red wires are for sound only, you will need to connect a video source, usually a yellow wire.

What is your video source? dvd, computer, vcr, cable

RF module related to Direct TV.

yes you can but the 2nd tv wont be in HD. The modulator can be purchased for any electronics store. what it does is turns a composite video signal (yellow, red, white cables) into a coax (screw in cable). it has an composite input that you would connect from the receiver and a coax output that you would connect to the other bedroom tv.
