If you've checked the device manager, and under the the system properties/profile, the cd/dvd drive is missing, symbolized by an X, then you indeed have a computer that does not recognize the cd/dvd drive. One more obvious---make sure you do have a cd/dvd drive phsycially (stupid question....BUT, just in case!). Now, for communication issues between computer and device components, some require the correct driver for communication issues to be resolved. Under device manager, if it recognizes the device, but is not enabled...just enable it. If it says no driver, go to the gateway website and look for your specific notebook (assuming your cd/dvd drive was not swapped out for another) and download the cd/dvd driver. This should correct the problem and have it working in tip-top shape.=)

This problem may be a bad cd/dvd drive. When the computer boots up, go into the BIOS setup. Check to see if the computer recognizes the drive, and make sure it is not disabled. Next, check in the "device manager" to see if there are any yellow question marks or red X's. This might indicate a driver problem, or a misconfigured drive. If these steps fail to resolve your problem, replacing the drive would be your next step. This is a fairly easy task, and worth the time to research the steps for your particular model.

My cd drive does not recognise cds

Okay. First of all is it a cd drive in your computer as opposed to a DVD drive? If you put a dvd into a cd drive it cannot recognize the dvd. A dvd drive can recognize a cd, but a cd drive cannot recognise a dvd.

Does your computer actually recognize the drive as being present?
If the drive isn't recognized by the computer try:

power off the laptop
Physically remove the cd or dvd drive
power -up the laptop without the cd/dvd drive
power off the latop and refit the dvd/cd drive
power it up again and see if the drive is
recognized

If the drive IS recognized by the laptop but won't play any disk it's probably the drive itself at fault. You can try gently cleaning the inside of the drive - the optic that reads the disk. However, the usual cause is failure of that optic which read the disk information. It cannot be repaired.

The alternative to fitting a new drive is to buy a portable dvd drive. They connect via a usb cable. Have a look on Ebay

My DVD/CD-RW drive isn't recognized/ doesn't play disks.

It may be bad. Has the laptop been damaged? Dropped? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD Rom drives, is it listed? In Start Menu, Computer, Is it listed? Try re installing the DVD rom driver, the MS Vista 32bit drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-a860

My pc does not recognizing optical drive

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. Hope this helps.

Tsstcorp cddvdw ts l633p error code 19

Code 19 means there is a driver conflict such as two devices trying to use the same resources.

Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab - click
Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL - REBOOT
this will refresh the default driver stack.

Normally the above will fix that issue if not work your way down through these even if you have done
them before.

Why is my computer not displaying the dvd/cd drive in my computer and not recognizing/reading cd/dvd even after I deleted the upper filter in Device Manager?

Like Vista, Windows 7 has some issues. That's why corporations, school systems and government entities are still on Windows XP. Only consumers have Vista and Windows 7 for the most part.

Since you've removed the Upper and Lower Filters, then remove the power cord, remove the battery, turn the laptop over and remove the DvD/CD drive. Open the lid and press and hold the Power Button for 30 seconds. Put everything back in (DvD/CD Drive, Battery, Power Cord) and reboot.

L305D-S5930 dvd wont burn documents to a dvd disc

You need a program, like nero.
if that doesn't work then put a DVD in the drive & see if the computer picks it up in the my computer.
the first thing that goes in a CD/DVD-RW drive is the DVD heads, thats if your drive is a CD/DVD-RW.
Have a look on the front of the drive tray, if it say CD-RW DVD ROM then it doesn't burn DVD's it only plays them.

My satellite won't recognize a cd/dvd drive when I open up my computer there isn't a drive at all how can I fix this

If you don't have a cd/dvd rom drive installed on your laptop then of course your laptop would not reconize a cd/dvd rom. Is you laptop a Netbook, usually netbook does not come with a cd/dvd drive. To solve this case, you will need to buy an external cd/dvd drive and hook it up via USB.

Dvd plays initially and then stops

Hi,
It could be the drivers for CD/DVD.
The best way to troubleshoot this is right click on computer, select manage. A new window will pop up, in that list select device manager.
Look in the list for CD/DVD drives and click on the + sign next to it, when the tree opens right click on the CD/DVD drive and select uninstall, then restart the PC.

This method will hard reset the system and force windows to load the default drivers for the CD/DVD upon restart. Hopefully this should resolve your problem.
If not please post back.

Good luck

Windows 7 Beta has deleted my DVD drive.

Do this to be sure that your dvd drive is still being recognized by your laptop. Turn on your laptop and go into your BIOS. Once your in there look to see if its listed in there. If it is then you know for sure that the laptop is recognizing it properly and that its a windows 7 issue. If the dvd is not recognized in the BIOS then what you need to do is with the power off. Take out the dvd drive completely and reseat it back into its slot. Then turn the laptop on, go back into the BIOS and see if its recognized in the BIOS now. If its still not recognized in the BIOS then that means the dvd drive is bad and would need to be replaced. As far as drivers are concerned and that you verified that the dvd drive is recongized in the BIOS, you may not be able to get drivers because windows 7 is not out for the public yet and drivers may not be available, you can always check the manufacuter of your dvd drive and go to there website to get drivers but since windows 7 is not out yet to the public your chances of getting a driver for it are slim.

CD/DVD not working, lapto doesn't recognizes it

It sounds like a problem with part of the I/O for the CD drive on the mother board. If the computer is under warranty, I would see about sending it back for service.

Normaly, if you are using original supported devices, if the drive is not defective and the drivers are installed, it should work.
