Onkyo rx-ds989 no sound from speakers

I picked up this receiver as is for 120 off craigslist. He mentioned it did not have any sound coming from the outputs. I found out onkyo has a 500 upgrade that will update the unit to version 2 standards. I have reset the unit and still have no sound. it it worth fixing this and updating it for 500 i dont see many around for sale so i am assuming most people are keeping them. Any ideas on the no sound. Everything else works and lights up, its heats up as it should just no sound any help please

With the initial price of this being as high as it is, it is probably worth saving.
If you haven't checked all outputs, I would advise doing so since that would help localize a potential point of failure.
If NO outputs are still alive, it may be a failure of the main power supply of the unit; if this is the case, the repair may not be that costly.
If some outputs are still active, it could still be a power supply failure since it is probably not servicing all channels from a single supply. Alternatively, it may be a failed output module with two channels in a shared housing.

Check the speaker wiring on back that it is not shorting against one another, output ic's may have bad solder connections and should be checked carefully.

Just purchased a Panasonic DMT-350 with analog 7.1 out and hooked up to my Onkyo 989 but tried everything and i mean everything to get my rear surround to play but no luck....pleeeeeease help me.

Hi.

Connect the Panasonic to one of the AV inputs on the Onkyo. Use red white and yellow AV cables. Connect the output from the Panasonic to one of the five AV video inputs on the Onkyo (or use the DVD dedicated input in the Onkyo backpanel). I indicated this option using red arrows. You can use any of the AV inputs or the DVD input at the bottom. Just ensure you do not connect to an output at the back of the Onkyo.

Alternatively use component cables and optical audio input, as indicated using the blue arrows in picture below. Select source and listen surround from the Onkyo.

There are more options. In some case you may decide to connect the DVD video output to TV and the audio to the Onkyo.

Here a manual for the TX DS989.

Here the backpanel:

No sound from Left and Right front speakers

You didn't state it but I assume the other channels are functional?
The auxilliary channels are generally lower power and may even be serviced by a different voltage than the main amps. If it is so designed, you may have something as simple as a blown fuse for the main amp supply.
If the aux. channels are equal in power, the power supply may still be dividing the load so a fuse still could be at fault. The unit could also use integrated power amplifiers in which case, if two channels are operating from a single module it could be a module failure.
I don't see much chance of anyone repairing this system without examining it in the first person.

Speakers

'Buzzing' is not a good thing; it implies that filtration of the DC used by the output section is not as it should be. Power supplies that are mildly overloaded can cause this or an abnormal current drain from one (or more) channels.

The odd problem with the back speakers does sound like a setup problem rather than a circuit failure.

Onkyo TX-DS989 not staying on

This sounds like the action of some protection circuit that is monitoring some condition or voltage that isn't within its design limits. If it was mine, I'd look for an Onkyo forum to see if others have experienced the same problem.

ONKYO AV RECEIVER TX-SR603X

When I initially bough mine, I had the same problem. It wouldn't shut down, but occasional popping sound on the center speaker. Turns out the impedance on the speaker was 4 ohms, not not 8. Replaced center with an o 8ohm speaker. This receiver is not reated to run 4 ohm speakers. If I had problems with 1, I can only imagine what kind of problems could happen if all the speakers were 4-ohms.

Dialogue - Not Audible

The dialogue comes from the center speaker. If you have a center speaker make sure that that it is connected correctly. If it is them check the speaker configuration setup menu. Make sure that the center channel is set to small. If it is set to none you will get no dialogue. If you don't have one make sure that it is set to none. Make sure that you have the speaker levels set correctly according to the manual. Lastly check the tweeter in your center channel is not blown.
