Well tbh it shouldnt really metter what operating system you are on, coz most of them are almost the same and they all do the same job how ever if you have ever installed any hdd of any kind then ul know that most hdds are partitioned. firstly you need to plug in your hdd and the restart your computer and put in the xp or vista operating system and boot from disk when it says press any key to boot press any key and it will take you throught the steps on how to format or make another partition and you will have a set of hdds to chose from, one being your C drive and the other being your exturnal drive. when u install a operating system it will give you the choice if you want to make another partition and then you just choose the size that you want it to be note that the size will come up as KB and not MB so it will be something like 160000 and then you wanna make 4 partitons so say you want 40GB for each one you should look at taken it down to 120000 and then 80000 and then 400000 you can do this as many times as you like but if this seems to hard or complex then there is another way im not 100% sure if its free but its paragon partition manager witch is a program that you just install and start it up and with your hdd pluged in it will show you all the hdds on your computer and you just select the hdd you want to partiton and then chose the size of the partition but yet again you can you can do this as many times as you want. if you are still having problems just send me a email and il get back to you. my addy is itsmrjt@hotmail.com

Partion of c and d for a 100 gb dell inspiron recomended portion

Why not just use the totals disk as one big partition? It's much easier and most times people fill up the c partition while the d partition sits there empty.

It would serve you better to have one big contiguous partition.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Total space problem. i have a buffalo turbo usb ministation 160GB but when i open my computer it has only a total size of 149GB...how to make it 160GB?......please help

The windows use some space for space addresing but not that much

It shoves 149 GB because manufacterers use the terms gigabyte in metric (base ten) way.

IT means 160 GB = 160 * 1000 MB = 160 000 * 1000 KB= 160 000 000 * 1000 Bytes

when you convert that in Gigabyte that computer use (1GB = 1024MB, 1MB = 1024 KB, 1 KB = 1024 Bytes) you get:

160 000 000 000 Bytes = 160 000 000 000 /1024 KB = 156250000 / 1024 MB = 152587,890625 / 1024 GB = 149,011 GB

WD drive won't work as master when Seagate 80GB drive connected as slave.

Hi,

The jumpers on the Seagate must be set to slave.

otherwise they are conflicting for the Active partion and bootloader.
