I set the time all right but when I set the date as soon as I enter 11-14-2008, it immediately starts flashing the first digit again. Pressing the Clock/Date Set button does nothing, it just continues to flash the first digit. I tried pressing the calendar/clock symbol again -- nothing. I've tried this at least ten times.

Immediately after entering the year part of the date, the display should revert back to a blinking first digit (in this case, the 0 to the left of the 8) while retianing all the following digits just entered. Simply press the Time/Date key again to lock in that date and stop the blinking. The same process applies for the time.
To clear the display of the time/date when using the calculator to actually compute something, press the C or CE button. This will result in a 0 appearing on the display. The unit is now ready for data entry.

To set the date, press the button once to display the factory supplied date and hold down the Equal ( = ) button that is two buttons below Date and Time until the screen flashes. OK, I bought one over the weekend just for chuckles. I figured it out.
On the top of the calculator there is a key that shows a little clock. Punch it once and the date appears...like 01-01-2000 or somesuch. Press it again and the time shows up..
Hold the time set key (=) down for a second until the first zero starts to flash. All you have to do is start punching in the time. When you are done press the time set key again. Voila!
Punch the key with the little clock again and the date shows up. Hold down the time set key for a second like explained above until it starts flashing. Enter the date with the key pad numbers. Done!
I couldn't figure this out either till I looked above each key (didn't notice what it said). Anyway, look real close.
Hope it works out for all and everyone finds this solution...
