My first chocolate 8500 did the same thing. the phone would turn off when I tried to use the camera. Shortly after that the screen went white. I had it replaced with another one that was again replaced when the halves seperated. The newest replacement after 6 months started having the same issue with the camera. This was a couple weeks ago. Now the button does not work at all and the screen is white again.
I am thinking this is an issue with the flexcable that connects the lcd/keypad to the pcb in the bottom half. I am going to get a replacement cable as soon as I can find one online and see if that is a fix. The phone is really easy to disassemble.

The problem was solved by replacing the flex cable that connects the two halves together. My phones screen is back, all the buttons work, and the camera button no longer reboots the phone (also going to camera through mypix doesn't cause reboot either). The cable was very easy to replace and took me 10 minutes at most only using a screw driver and the info in the link I provided ealier.

IPhone camera won't open

Try restarting your phone by doing a full reboot. Hold down the power button and the button on the front for about 8 seconds. then slide to power off. Once that's done, restart your phone by pressing the power button. If that doesn't work do a full restore of your phone via iTunes.

Lg vu won't let you dial

Press the unlock button, next to the the camera shutter button, then try again. If that does not work, try turning the phone of for a few minutes and rebooting it. I've had similar problems with my phone as well, but I find rebooting it every 2 days solves this.
