Question about Hunter 20537 / 20538 The Vista Iron Ceiling Fan
The upper retainer ring is metal and does not have screws nor dimples and I'm unable to squeeze it in any way. Applying pressure and attempting to rotate the retainer ring in either direction causes the whole fan to try to rotate in the same direction.
Thanks for your help.

Okay. Turn off circuit breaker. Take the bottom off the fan. Mark how the wires are connected. Remove switch by unscrewing the sleeve you mentioned. Take the switch to Home Depot (or the like) -- buy a replacement.
If you have to turn the breaker back on during this process, make sure you have a wire nut over the end of each of the loose wires you disconnected from the switch.
After you take the switch out, you'll know how to reinstall it, so I won't go thru that.

I had the same problem. I found that the reverse button needs to be pressed really hard. It now works but I need to press that button really really hard.

Home Depot sells universal remote systems (transmitter and receiver) for around $30 (in Delaware & Pennsylvania) -- don't know price in Chicago).
I'd just replace it. Hunter may be correct that they are the only source for the receiver, but if you get a new transmitter as well, you don't need their receiver. The labor is the same either way.

Unfortunately, you either have a faulty reciever or remote. A replacement will cost $30-$40 at homedepot. And it doesn't matter which is faulty because you can't purchase them seperately anyhow.
