I ended up using the recovery option Gateway offers that did comes up on power up. (Key F11). Re-formatted the entire hard drive, re-loaded Windows (XP Media) and had to reload all of the software programs again. Lost all data that was on that hard drive (had most of the data files backed up on to a Maxtor external drive.)

Very long process, but all seems well for now.

I will do a check disk anyhow and thanks for your post.

Have you updated a Graphic driver? Does it Dim on battery and AC? Look at power settings. Control Panel, Power. You could Rool-Back the graphic driver to see if that changes the problem. A Gateway mt6841 has Windows XP OS, right?

Gateway MP8708 Won't boot past BIOS and won't boot into CD/USB/Safe Mode on XP - Blank screen with keyboard dead - Num locks on and wireless light

Windows won't start up? Well, try this Download Tenorshare Data Recovery from its offical site and install it. Burn it into CD/DVD, or USB flash, put into the computer you need to repair, Bios setting. It can make sure your important data will not lose. Best of luck

After updating drivers IBM laptop won t boot freezes

Run the Check Disk Utility

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I have a Gateway MP6954 laptop with factory 120GB SATA hard drive. I'm trying to install a Seagate 500GB SATA hard drive and am getting "no hard drive installed" when booting from XP CD. Any ideas?

you need to check the specs on your gateway to be sure your laptop firmware can accept the 500G hard drive (might be too big for it to see). I would first check for any firmware updates from the gateway website first and any notes that they can provide to you.
Another point is the kind of hard drive you are looking at. Is it an SATA drive? PSATA? EIDE? This also needs to be clarified to be sure you have the right kind of drive. You can verifi\y that you system can see the drive by looking in the CMOS screens to see if it sees the drive. I suggest you start there and check for updates to the firmware if you do not see it in there (CMOS). Thanks!

My windows xp cant boot propery it is restarting itself.

-Try to boot the system to windows xp cd,then run windows repair.
-repairing windows make take up to 1-2 hours depending what capacity of hdd you have but you may need to complete the repair. If repair failed to complete.
-contact manufacturer and have them diagnose the entire system. and chck for the system warranty and look if there any error code if the error code lead to replacing the hdd, then request to replace the hdd.
