Kenmore Dishwasher #587.... doing nothing but heat dry
Filled dishwasher, sounded like it ran through a cycle but noticed that 3 hours later it was still on Heat dry.... when I opened it some of the plastic had melted and nothing was clean. Tested again and there is no water running through the DW but the heat works.... believe me!

- After running the dishwasher through a wash cycle, I find that all the dishes are still dirty, and the soap is now lying in a pile near the float thing at the bottom left corner. The heat and water do work. - jng442Jan 05, 2009

The problem appears to stem from the float and float switch. The float is a mushroom shaped plastic part that resides on the bottom left, just inside the door. It appears that the float does not release the float switch, causing the dishwasher to think it is full of water, and won't allow the dishwasher to fill. It's a relatively straight forward repair, but even with a new part, the same scenario is likely to repeat itself until the float or float switch is modified by Kenmore.
