Can I refinish a plastic kayak?

Some beginners want to buy the Best Fishing Kayaks they can get their hands on right from the start. Others just want to get started and expect to upgrade down the road. The latter approach is the one we recommend as most kayakers will eventually own multiple boats over the course of their life.For this reason, we recommend that most beginners start out with a used plastic kayak.

The gist of the plastic or composite kayak discussion is like this. Plastic kayaks are more durable, less expensive, and heavier than composite boats. Fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber, and even wooden kayaks are all lighter and faster, but more delicate than their plastic counterparts. Unless you have lots of kayaking experience to know exactly what you want and how to take care of it, we recommend going with plastic at first.

How weak and how do you know? This is a plastic boat AIUI and it will have some flex. Without examining the spot, I would say it is hard to do much without adding weight or ugly or both. Maybe a criss-cross of duct tape to reinforce if there really is a need, and you can reach it.

No poly-plastics of the type used in manufacturing can only be armor-all surface cleansed but makes the craft very slippery to lift and use. Color is restored though. Make sure there are no brittle areas that have been 'cooked' by the sun while stored in a yard. IMPORTANT!

My kayak was nearly 30 years old & exposed to the elements all the time. To clean it up, I washed it down with the Amway Car Wash & polished with the Amway Silcon Glaze car polish.

The kayak came up beautifully & I'm still using it today

There is really no easy way short of sanding lightly and repainting. (I am told that "tremclad" paint intended for exterior use on metal in tough situations is good for this kind of thing.)

Wax (car wax or wax for fibreglass boats--which is often available in colour) will work for the short term.

get a lens refinishing kit on ebay or at parts store

what is the canoe made of... it may not look pretty but fiberglass will work.... you can sand and paint it later as well
