I have purchased greeting cards size 5" x 7" (12.7cm x17.8cm). I am unable to print to this size. I am able to print all other default sizes but changing size utilising 'user defined' does not work. I set the size as above but when I print it is smaller.

no not necessarily. I suggest you align your printer tray in such a way that it will instantly insert the paper and print it successfully. Otherwise the problem is maybe the unit itself or the drivers..
sounds like your printing to a custom page size in your printer properties in the computer, go into control panel >> printers >> right click your printer >> go to properties
Set the page size to A4 or Letter.
When you go to print your document, use the printer properties button to make sure your page size remains at A4 or Letter.
I think the printer may be asking you to insert your custom page size, and then waiting for the "Go" button to print, next page . repeat. (kinda like if you were inserting envelopes or greeting cards), Also check that your page setup in your word /office software is set to letter, as this would cause the same result.
I'm printing wedding invitation envelopes (or A6) and had to set both my C4480 and psc1315 to a regular size 8.5x11 letter size but changed my margins to reflect the smaller size for my envelope with the left side of the screen being the more narrow margin. After adjusting the top margin accordingly, I fed the envelopes, flap side down and straight into the printer and voila...envelope addresses are printed. Good luck.
If you look closely at the very front of the paper tray, just to the left of the sliding thing that keeps the paper from drifting out of the front, you will see a couple of illustrations showing how to position envelopes in the paper feeder. For regular letter-sized envelopes, or even greeting card envelopes, place them face down with the top of the envelope pointing to the left as you are facing the printer. The return address area should be away from you. Position the envelope all the way to the right side of the paper feeder, then gently slide the envelope all the way back until it is stops so that it is accessible by the paper feeder. Bear in mind that it will be flipped over when it comes out. To avoid wasting an envelope, do a trial print on a piece of paper to make sure you understand the positioning correctly. Good luck!
Make sure you check the settings in the print driver. Sounds like your paper size settings do not match the size of the paper that you are printing onto and you are actually getting a false jam because the machine is seeing a different size paper then you ahve in it.
The problem is usually caused by printing a PDF file with fonts/page size/ page formating errors which will cause the printer to display the 49.3048 error. The only way to use the printer is to POR or recycle the power and delete the print job from the server or spooling device and cancel it on the printer before the offending command is issued to the printer again. You can try updating the firmware to the latest version 46.140.5 from the HP website. MIke L.
