New 256 Mb RAM in Compaq Presario 17XL2 not recognized

Bought two 256 Mb sticks to replace the one 64 Mb that came in the laptop Presario. PC won't even put logo on screen so apparently no POST. Replacing the outboard card with the original (leaving the new card in the inboard slot) shows a POST summary with 320Mb and boots to a message that ''himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS memory at 04001960...'' . Opened the configuration tool and found 64Mb maximum - increased to 512 with no improvement. Machine will boot with 64 Mb card in inboard slot unless new card is in outboard slot then no POST. Found one internet post that there might be an ECC/non-ECC issue but no option on CMOS setup. The new chips read 256MB synch 133MHz CL2 and PC133-333-542 plus MT1BLSD8464G-13381. I have replaced the Pentium with a Celeron if that matters. Thanks for any assistance whatsoever.

Actually, the celeron is 500 MHz and the faulty Pentium was 600. If I can get the memory issue fixed I plan to upgrade to a 1 GHz Pentium. The diagnostics don't show a problem with the old memory and the replacement CPU. Both new chips behave the same so they are either both bad or ? The motherboard is a Tiger built for Compaq and I can't find any jumpers or switches but I did use the configuration tool to tell the machine to accept more memory. The motherboard was built in 2000 so I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find any info on it - unless you know of a source. Thanks for looking at this for me.

is the replacement CPU have the same frequency or it is higher.?

if it is not the same frequecy. you need to look on the motherboard and change the CPU frequency configuration to match the new chip.

there may have memory select on the motherboard. you need to change that also.

second. the second memorie chip may be bad (very unlikely).

500Mhz CPU use DDR333/400 memories. majority are used in MAC.
800Mhz CPU use DDR2 400/533/667 Mhz.
look like either you cna change the CPU or change meories again to match them up.

I have an Acer TravelMate 514T PC Notebook running with only 64MB RAM, and I want to put in a 256 MB RAM. How do I make the notebook recognize the 256 MB RAM card?

Mostly what I came across this models they only can detect until 128 mb and they do run a little faster than having 64 mb.And see if the card is pc100. and it is also dependent on what is your operating system is.If your notebook memory slot is two get two 128mb and you'll have 256mb.

Which ram support for compaq presario c700 tu''

This laptop can have a max of 2Gb of ram, (2x1gb)

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot, None-ECC
Hope this helps.
Aslong as you get 512Mb or 1Gb sticks of PC2-5300 none-ecc laptop ram, you will be fine.

My Dell C600 won't recognize the 2 new 256 mb sticks of RAM

i think you need a same brand of 256 for it to work? and when you buy something for your computer make sure that the one you both is the same brand or code with your 128 for example you have 128 ddr2 sdram so you can only upgrade it with 256 ddr sdran or 512mb,1gb,2gb ddr sdram.

Memory upgrade for Compaq Presario 2195 us

This is helpful for process on changin ram.CLICK HERE

As far as i can tell your computer will hold up to 1024 megs of ram that is 2 512 sticks. Just pic up the other 512 and call it a day that way you know your maxxed out on ram anyway. Not sure if it will take the different size sticks as I haven't found anything on their site. TRY HERE

Well i have a compaq presario 1700 XL360 it came with pc100 64 memory ram i tried to upgraded with two 256 memory ram to bring it to total 512 mb thats the max for this computer ...

There is a good chance that your system needs a firmware upgrade in order to recognize the bigger memory. I found one in this page

Be carefull and follow the instructions since you could brick your system.

If that does not work, do not expend more money in that system (very old), just save to get a new one.

P.S. The memory you got is the right kind.

Good luck

How much more memory can I install

This laptop can support up to a max of 1 GB of RAM , so if you buy 1 stick of 1 GB of RAM you need to take out the 768 MB and just put the 1 stick of 1 GB RAM, or your other option is to buy a 256 MB of RMA so your computer will still have a max of 1 GB of RAM and that would be cheaper and you can still use your old RMA on your laptop , this is the lin for the complete specs of your laptop http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Compaq-Refurbished-COMPAQ-P4-M-1-8GHZ-256MB-30GB-14-1-TFT-CDRW-W-XP

Hope that helps...........

Compaq Presario M2000 PC Notebook

The Bios on the laptop motherboard only will recognize a total of 1gig Ram. So the 256 stick would be removed and 2- 512 sticks installed.
