Question about Power Tillers & Cultivators

Rough Running I have a Craftsman tiller that will only run with the full choke on. When I move the choke to run it stalls. I do not get full power with the choke on

It's an old Pony 5 horse. Difficult to start, but fired right up with Quick Start after storage. Now, one minute it idles/runs fine with a lot of choke, next time it simply refuses to even cough or sputter. Spark looks good when plug removed. Compression seems low when cranking, but I have no feel for what good compression should be.

It depends on the type of engine but it sounds like your carbeurator is running lean. there is and mixture adjustment screw on most of the older models, alot of the newer carbs. are pre set to emission standards. try a fuel additive called sea foam, this product has solved solved many of my fuel related issues.

Honda cg160 tiller the engine was running rough With choke all the way in, fine at halfway. then stopped moving forward, moves but no strength to till. What's wrong??

while your choke is out your engine is getting too much petrol . if it wont run well with choke in then its not getting enough. there is a small screw on the side of the carb ( air mixture ) they are usualy ( from screwed right in ) 1 and a half turns out, try with 1 and a half turns out start engine and adust either way so it idles nice ( try and warm engine up first ) also if you can't get it to idle you might have to strip card off and clean it ...hope this helps

Did you pull the spark plug and clean it, as well as the plug well and compression ring. Blow it out with canned air and dry before replacing the plug. Be certain the plug GAP is correct and it is free of carbon deposits. Rest the plug, tighten by hand and let her go. See if that fixes the problem.

Honda mini tiller cuts off when start tilling. runs great when held above ground with no load. cut off seems to be associated with the movement and shacking when tilling ground.

Hi thermo259, sounds like the high speed adjustment is lean, find the high speed screw and turn it counter clockwise 1 half turn and see if that helps. Should cure it.

Will run with full choke on but once i turn choke off it dies

The carb jets are clogged, it will have to be removed and soaked in carb cleaner. Sometimes that will not work either, and the carb will have to be replaced. Reason is, some of the carb passages are as fine as a human hair, so it's hard to get gunk and bad/dried gas deposits out.

You could try running something called Sea Foam (mixed in the gas)from Walmart through the tiller for a while, that MAY help somewhat.

Need spark plug gap. and carb setting

gap should be about .020 - Carb setting is adjusted while running - lo idle and hi - lo idle adjusted to the lowest RPM before it stalls or starts running rough, the hi is adjusted at full throttle for the smoothest / highest rpm

Cannot keep tiller running

Could a gas/oil mix been used by mistake. When you cleaned carb did you also clean dusty air filter?? Try leaveing off filter first and run. Are you sure you are in "choke position" when engines seems to be running ok,be sure to double check yourself here. If engine runs ecelleant in "choke" sounds like your in "Run" position and positioning is problem not performance.

Please rate. Thanks jj505

Craftsman tiller leaks gas

could just be the gasket under the screw that holds the bowl on needs the nut tightened a little, or like mine I put just a little gas resistant form a gasket under the seal on the underside of the bowl and retighted now no leaks.

good luck
