Question about IBM ThinkPad Soundcard

DVD-R doesn't work

I'm assuming I can obtain some free advice.

I have a Samsung R40 notebook, approx 18 months old. The DVD R drive doesn't open, nothing jammed, no disc inside. The drawer will open if you use the paperclip and tiny aperture routine and when a disc is inserted nothing happens and the disc is not recognised. It used to work and I haven't used this DVD feature for ages, at least a year, but now it doesn't work at all. The light on the drawer doesn't work either. The laptop itself is in excellent condition and has barely been used, honest.

Tks for the quick response Dave

I got to the device manager area and the DVD drive was listed. Upon clicking it the following appeared:

    MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8505

Well, tks again for your efforts Dave,

    I uninstalled the said driver.

It was replaced by the standard, I guess, default CD Rom driver - SAMSUNG HM100JC if that makes any sense.

The original driver that I uninstalled loaded, it was detected in the usual way with the balloon notification you always get when new hardware is plugged in.

    Still no joy.

So I guess your first assessment that a power problem exists is likely to be right.

For some reason my reply from Friday or two subsequent replies are not appearing on this page.

I uninstalled the driver successfully and it was replaced by what I assume to be the default driver Samsung HM100JC.

I rebooted and the DVD driver loaded again and was detected.

Sadly, no further joy with the light and the drawer still won't open, so I guess your original diagnosis of a power problem may well be accurate.

Gareth,

I can't seem to find THAT particular model number on Samsungs website. So I can only offer generalized advice.

It sounds like you are not getting power to this optical unit, as you said you don't get any activity light blinking.

Most Notebook manufacturers make their DVD units so that they can be swapped with other components. (Ie... a Floppy drive or additional battery etc....) If you have such a unit please swap out the components and see if the new one is recognized. If not proceed to next step.

With you DVD drive connected
Press the <Windows> key and <Pause/Break> simultaneously then select Device manager/ Hardware tab then device manager depending on whether you have Vista/XP then look under DVD/CD or Optical drives to see if the device is showing up

If it is NOT there you have a problem with the Physical connection between your PC and the drive and will likely need to have an authorized service person perform a repair.

If it IS shown in device manager then you likely have a driver issue. Take note of the exact name given to it under device manager and post THAT here and we can direct you to where you can get the proper driver.

Hope this helps ya,
Dave

    Gareth,

From what I can find the driver for this unit is included in Windows. The one you have may have been corrupted, So what I need to have you do is right click on the drive, select Uninstall, go through that routine. Then reboot the PC. It should detect and reinstall your Drive with the proper driver.

If it fails to try to reinstall the device itself, heres how to do it manually. Open device manager again and at the top item in the listing right above "Computer" right click and select "Scan for hardware changes" This should initiate the Plug and Play driver installation.

Hope this helps, if it doesn't just comment back and I will try to help you further.

    Best regards

    Dave

I can't open the DVD door on my Gateway SX2370 and can't find the reset button (pinhole you would stick a paperclip into). Any idea where it is?

Straighten a paperclip & insert it into the pinhole afront the DVD drive until the drive door opens no further. Carefully but firmly pull it open the rest of the way. Some optical disk drives (ODD's) that tend to require this eject method function just dandy as long as there's an optical disk in the drive. So, it might be a good idea to leave one in there until the drive is replaced. For drives that Windows "cannot find," uninstall such ODD's from the Device Manager & run Microsoft's FixIt tool (Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can't read or write media) for problems with getting a CD/DVD to read/write.

Hi deniskamzola,

How to find for software for reinstall pc

To resolve your problem assuming that you do not have the restoration cd nor make one when asked to, first, call compaq to purchase the cd or second, get a windows cd, install and connect to www.hp.com/support to obtain drivers. All HP/Compaq pc's gives you an option to do this unless if your pc is more than 10 years old.

Samsung R40 sound has disappeared

Hi Steve

there is an icon on the status bar on the bottom right of the computer for the sound volume can you just make sure the volume hasn't been turned off. it a small speaker. If its ok you can try the following. Just one question.

Do you have any of the disks that came with the PC or did you but it second hand. If you have the disk you have to first uninstall the sound driver if they are not working properly before you can reinstall it.

Can you first check whats the story with the drivers in hardware manager. I'll tell you how to get to it. BE very careful in here you could cause major problems if you go changing settings in here so try and follow along and dont change anything just tell me what is happen in the settings.

Go to Start > you will see my computer icon. Right Click and go to properties. there are seven tabs at the top click hardwre > device manager > you need to scrool down to Sound, Video and game controller. Click to highlight it or double click to open it or click the small + sign to the left once highlighted it opens the menu. Can you come back and tell me what it looks like. don't go at anything else in here.

Could you make sure you speaker wire is plugged in properly. Im just going through the obvious. but it can get removed if you move the computer.
