Question about IBM ThinkPad Soundcard

DVD-R doesn't work

I'm assuming I can obtain some free advice.

I have a Samsung R40 notebook, approx 18 months old. The DVD R drive doesn't open, nothing jammed, no disc inside. The drawer will open if you use the paperclip and tiny aperture routine and when a disc is inserted nothing happens and the disc is not recognised. It used to work and I haven't used this DVD feature for ages, at least a year, but now it doesn't work at all. The light on the drawer doesn't work either. The laptop itself is in excellent condition and has barely been used, honest.

Tks for the quick response Dave

I got to the device manager area and the DVD drive was listed. Upon clicking it the following appeared:

Well, tks again for your efforts Dave,

    I uninstalled the said driver.

It was replaced by the standard, I guess, default CD Rom driver - SAMSUNG HM100JC if that makes any sense.

The original driver that I uninstalled loaded, it was detected in the usual way with the balloon notification you always get when new hardware is plugged in.

    Still no joy.

So I guess your first assessment that a power problem exists is likely to be right.

For some reason my reply from Friday or two subsequent replies are not appearing on this page.

I uninstalled the driver successfully and it was replaced by what I assume to be the default driver Samsung HM100JC.

I rebooted and the DVD driver loaded again and was detected.

Sadly, no further joy with the light and the drawer still won't open, so I guess your original diagnosis of a power problem may well be accurate.

I can't seem to find THAT particular model number on Samsungs website. So I can only offer generalized advice.

It sounds like you are not getting power to this optical unit, as you said you don't get any activity light blinking.

Most Notebook manufacturers make their DVD units so that they can be swapped with other components. (Ie... a Floppy drive or additional battery etc....) If you have such a unit please swap out the components and see if the new one is recognized. If not proceed to next step.

With you DVD drive connected
Press the <Windows> key and <Pause/Break> simultaneously then select Device manager/ Hardware tab then device manager depending on whether you have Vista/XP then look under DVD/CD or Optical drives to see if the device is showing up

If it is NOT there you have a problem with the Physical connection between your PC and the drive and will likely need to have an authorized service person perform a repair.

If it IS shown in device manager then you likely have a driver issue. Take note of the exact name given to it under device manager and post THAT here and we can direct you to where you can get the proper driver.

Hope this helps ya,

From what I can find the driver for this unit is included in Windows. The one you have may have been corrupted, So what I need to have you do is right click on the drive, select Uninstall, go through that routine. Then reboot the PC. It should detect and reinstall your Drive with the proper driver.

If it fails to try to reinstall the device itself, heres how to do it manually. Open device manager again and at the top item in the listing right above "Computer" right click and select "Scan for hardware changes" This should initiate the Plug and Play driver installation.

Hope this helps, if it doesn't just comment back and I will try to help you further.

    Best regards

The Samsung DVD recorder does not record. Is it cheaper to repair or cheaper to buy another? This combi is approx 2 years old.

I would say for a 2 years old set, its better to buy a new one than repairing it as new one is far more cheaper. DVD recorders are becoming more and more cheaper as BLURAY recorders already hit the market. My advice, get a new one and dump the old one. You will get 1 year warranty too for buying the new one. If u repair the old one, there's no guarantee that it wont get spoiled again.

I have bought by mail order an IBM Think Pad reconditioned. It does have a users manual and I cannot work out how to use the DVD drive. In fact no drive seems to be loaded. What do I do under these...

Did you get a complete set of IBM "System Recovery" CDs/DVDs?
If so, then reinstall Microsoft Windows, which will install all the IBM-provided software to support the DVD drive.

If you did not get those CDs/DVDs, you will need to contact IBM/Lenovo, and for about $60 (shipping included), obtain a replacement set.

Dvd drive wont work

You probably need a new drive. if the computer is only six months old it should still be under warranty. Just call the manufacturer and tell them you have a faulty dvd rom and see if you have to send the computer back or if they can just send you a new drive.

R40 Thinkpad CD drive

Sounds like more of a software problem, I've had my dvd drive only show up as a cd drive but i think that was only in windows 98? Many problems will start showing up when your disk is very full. Try deleting some old files until you have 25% free space (only 75% full) or 20% free (80 full) at the minimum, then defragment. I recommend using a 3rd party program such as Diskeeper, since windows defrag Isn't very good.
If you can not free up enough space because all of your things are too important to delete, think about buying an external hard drive to back up too, or simply look for a bigger hard drive of the laptop and copy the old hard drives contents to the new one using something like norton ghost.
Most likely you would need a laptop hdd to desktop hdd converter, which is like $5 or less, so you can copy the contents since laptops can only have one hard drive (usually). If you can't do this or don't want to try it, bring your laptop to a pc repair shop and they will transfer your data to a bigger hdd for you for a nominal fee.
Remember, I do not guarantee this to fix your dvd problem, but it is a good idea to do it anyways to increase performance and reliability.
