From the main menu, go to settings and click on the tab: EQ
You can change the style of your music & includes things like: vocal booster.

Just a thought,

I transferred music to my mp4, however I cannot hear it when it plays. I know it was transferred correctly, but the music bar moves/plays but no sound is heard. My headphones are new.

Try a different set of headphones, if there is still no sound, check the volume limit on the iPod: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38403?viewlocale=en_US
if that still does not help try resetting it by pressing the MENU and PLAY buttons simultaneously for a couple of seconds, I hope that did work. But, if it didn't, try doing the diagnostic in it to find out if it is a faulty jack: http://www.wikihow.com/Hack-an-iPod-Nano-3G Hope it is just headphones!

Sounds like one channel of my music has gone out, I can hear music but no voices or voices that sound like they are in a trashcan, I have already reset to factory conditions and reloaded songs to no avail.

this might be a problem in the headphones (hopefully) or in the iPod itself

is the music coming out of both ears?

no: bend the wire around where it comes out of the iPod. bend it all different directions more than 90 degrees
if not: try other headphones in the the iPod

yes: the problem is probably in the iPod's hardware itself and will ether need to be sent back to apple to be fixed (expensive), or sold.
you could try to fix it yourself, but it could be a number of things so it may be easier to just get a new one

When my headphones are in the music wont come on but when its in my ihome the music works

theres a good posibility that your headphone jack is messed up and needs replacing the ipod uses the charging port when connected to the ihome and not the headphone jack

Sound isnt working properly when using headphones

you might have an "EQ" set up to reduce the vocals
go into the settings app hit "music" next to "EQ" check to see if it says anything besides "Off" if it does: tap "EQ" and tap "Off"

Music outside the iPod

You can't because you can't. It is not a speaker that is meant for music, last time i checked it was pseudo something but forgot the exact name, its not able to make audio, just ticking sounds. Its sort of like the 'beep' that happens when your computer starts, you can't make that speaker play music it just beeps..

Music loud, voice low-pitched

Found your question due to having the exact problem you described. New firmware, format... loaded new music, same problem. While switching to yet another set of headphones the sound got better momentarily. The case doesn't appear loose, but squeeze right next to the lcd and lyra name and the audio was fixed. For some reason the audio was mechanical sounding and the voice was almost non-existant unless pressure was placed on the player where described. I tightened the screw in the retaining strap hole and the one under the USB connector flap and all is well for now. Good Luck!!!!
