In your system you should be using synaptics touchpad driver. First of all look for it under mouse properties in control panel. If its not there then install in from support.dell.com. Under this application you would be having option to disable touchpad when external mouse connected. Try this.

Will your laptop work properly with an external mouse? If so, check your touchpad settings in "Control Panel" by selecting "Mouse". Here you can reassign your Buttons. Try setting your Right Button function to "Double Click". If the "Double Click" function works on your Right Button then chances are you have a problem with your Touchpad Assembly which means it will have to be replaced. Dell refers to it as a "Palmrest" which they will replace if still under warranty.

Hi MKW,

I know the feeling. Here we go,

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Click System
  3. Click the Hardware Tab
  4. Click Device Manager
  5. Click the '+' located to the left of Mice and other controllers
  6. There should be two mice listed. Select the touchpad.
  7. Right Click it then click on Properties.
  8. At the bottom where it says 'Device Usage', Change it to Disable.
  9. Click OK until you're out.
  10. If it wants to reboot, let it.
That ought to do it. Hope you found this to be very helpful.

The cursor bounces around when I type, especially in Word. Do you know how I can correct this problem? I read that disabling the touch pad might remedy the problem; if so, how do you disable the touch...

As you type, your wrists could be close-enough to the touch-pad to move the mouse-pointer.

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Mouse
Change the setting to disable the touch-pad.
