Our Roper washer's agitator is lose. It is up off of the bottom part of the agitator. I don't know if it is turning during the cycles. I don't think it is. The washer also leaks. We have checked all of the hoses etc but there is no leaks in those areas. We wonder if the leak is coming from the lose agitator.

Re: Agitator top part is lose
Pop the top off your agitator. There is 4 small plastic pieces that make the top part of the agitator work. Remove the 7/16 bolt in the center of the agitator and pull the top of the agitator out. Replace what they call a dog kit. Go to any parts store and they will know exactly what your talking about. They are olny about 6 bucks. its an easy fix so no need for a service technician.

The agitator is made in two parts. Upper and lower. The bottom part does the actual agitating. The upper part is supposed to be loosely fitted. It just screws down the clothes to contact the bottom agitator slowly. The top part turns one way, and slips the other way. By the action of what is called "Dogs" inside the top part. These dogs are probably worn and need to be replaced Take the top off the agitator and there is one bolt in the middle of the agitator. use a long extension to reach the bolt and remove it. Pull off top agitator (keep it straight up so you don't lose the dogs_ Go to local Appliance store and ask for Agitator Dogs. Replace Dogs exactly as they came out When you re-assemble the top it will be loose. This is normal. Good Luck! Thank you for using fixya Leo Ponder Please rate me if this helped.
I don't know if the agitator is turning or not but the whole agitator is lose from the bottom part of the agitator. The washer also leaks. We have checked all of the hoses etc and there is no problem with that. We wonder if the leak isn't coming from the agitator being lose.
there are what they call agitator dawgs that have probably stripped out, think i might have saw a video on how to repair them on you tube (search whirlpool agitator repair). simole enough to do you will need to remove the agitator using a 7/16 socket. Part number 80040.
It sounds like you need to replace your agitator dogs (yes, there is such a thing). They are small plastic pieces that are used by the upper portion of the agitator to grip as it turns. This is a common problem when they wear out. If you go to searspartsdirect.com, there's an illustration of what I'm talking about under the "Agitator, Basket and Tub Parts" heading. Item number 10 (part number 80040) is what you need to replace. Just type in your complete model number in the "Search by Model Number" block. The following link provides you with step-by-step instructions on how to do this:
you need to install new agitator dogs . very in expensive. remove cap on top of agitator reach in and remove opaque cover. you should see a 1/2 " bolt remove that and pull up on agitator. pull apart two halves. disassemble. install four dogs. reassemble in reverse order
