Hello Monica, thank you for your post! Based off the information you have provided your Electrolux washer is displaying an error code of “E40”. I am showing that an “E40” error code means this could be an issue with your door swicth or main control board. I would recommend performing a reset on your washer and you can do that by disconnecting the power cord for at least ten minutes. If you continue to receive the error code once power has been restored you may need to seek assistance from a professional technician for a proper diagnosis. Hopefully this information is helpful to you. –Matt
on Oko washing machines E40 means defective door lock. Since a faulty door lock switch may go out with vibration you often do not get the error all the time. The door lock switch must be tested and eventually replaced.
E40 normally points to a fault at the door switch, sometimes when the door switch fault occurs it can also cause damage to the main P.C.B.(Programmer).As this machine is still in the major parts warranty it would be advisable to get in touch with Electrolux.
The Error E40 warning means the door is not properly closed. The E40 error code indicates a loss of electrical power usually but not always due to the door not shutting properly or not locking. But, since you smelled burning it could be any electrical short that blew a fuse and shut the machine down. It could also be the motor windings with the internal overload protector shutting it down.

I've just bought one of these machines, and the manual says the E40 warning means the door is not properly closed. Seems like that would be obvious if it were true, but maybe check that it is closing completely.
