Question about Mitsubishi WT-46809 46" Rear Projection Television
I have a Mitsubishi Medallion (ws65819) which is arching after a repair man came to fix.Charged us +$200 but only soldered...didnt replace the semi conducter. Now, if he comes back, he wants $400 ...for a part costing less then $20.What recourse should I have ?
That series of model uses the STK 393-110, whose legs don't just go intermittent - cold solder joints - on the board ends, they also go intermittent - and cold solder - on the chip ends! All other Mit HDreadys have their ICs go cold solder on the board ends when the convergence starts to go intermittent, and you can usually save the part if you get to it in time, and don't run it too long in its bad condition. He did try that for you rather than charge you for a replacement part, so he's to be commended for that, at least.
Not so for the 393-110. That IC gives way at the ends up above, IN the IC, and it's really tough to get in there and resolder all of them. Really not worth the effort when it's already aged as much as it has once this starts to happen. Like a throwout bearing on a car's tranny, it's best to have the IC replaced with a brand new one and thus upgraded and start over, once you've done all the labor it takes to get that far. Convergence ICs work very hard in there, and like a car's thermostat, if either one goes out you just replace it and keep going.
So tell him he'll need to bring that IC with him this time, and you're willing to pay for the additional parts cost. It's definitely worth it on that set, that's a dynamite set!
