Picture weak and stays on only a few seconds.

Sony KV36FS120 - 5 blinks. First TV would not come on at all. Repairman came and replaced the flyback hi output transformer. The TV will come on but the picture is very weak and goes out after only a few seconds but the sound stays up. Repairman thinks it needs a new picture tube but TV is only 3 years old. Any suggestions?

Hello tellis356,

He replaced the Integrated High Voltage Transformer (IHVT) (I so hate the term flyback even though it is descriptive of the function of the component). However he may have only solved part of the problem. My next question is did he perform a diagnostic on the CRT (picture tube)? It may well be the CRT, but I would first suggest that you have the repairman check the voltage and signal levels in the horizontal section of the TV and check the video signal and voltage levels at the output of the Video processor to the CRT socket board. Then after these are tested and proven to be within specifications, then run a diagnostic on the CRT using a CRT test set. This way he'll know for sure if the problem is in the circuitry or the CRT.

I am suspecting that the first trouble you experienced was the set was completely out? If so that is why he may have replaced the IHVT. He should have also replaced the Horizontal Output Transistor because it is in series with the IHVT and would have taken some of the damage that the IHVT would have sustained. So having him check that too would not be out of sorts.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

I have a Panasonic CT-36hL43G TV that just turned offf while watching it and now the led by the power button blinks one time. Can anyone tell me what this code means or what the problem might be?

i hope your tv is more than 4years old ....... in all CRT TV's or CRT monitors after 4years a component called flyback transformer (see picture ) becomes weak - its work is to supply voltage to tube............. then following are the signs ...
(1) in some TV's only front LED's blinks - no picture no sound.... (2) in some TV's picture comes slowly after few seconds or after few mins or after few hours......... (3) in some TV's suddenly picture & sound goes temporarly & after some time again it appears ...... etc in case of (2) & (3) only flyback transformer needs to be replaced .....100% GUARANTEE again TV works normallyBUT in case of (1)... --------------- YOUR CASE (a) either only flyback transformer gets deffective or (b) flyback transformer & another component called transister ( will be near flyback transformer & its back portion is attached to aluminium metal ) gets defective or (c) along with flyback & transistor -- 3 or 4 more components (resistors, diodes, some times ICs ) gets deffective so replacing flyback transistor is a must .. & to find whether any other component is deffective or not completemainboard has to be checked ....... so if you are a technical person & having expierence in servicing line then you can do it yourself otherwise approach good tv service engineer ........... your TV is really very good one ... so don't think of buying new TV .... just goahead for repairing it it is worth & it works for atleast 2 more yrs....... try this & tell me what happened switch off your TV ... remove power cord from socket ,,,,.ware some mat or chapples to your feet ..... remove your TV's back side cover ......... observe carefully for any physically damaged components .... if you find then don't do anything ... close tv cover & approach tv service engineer ............. but if no physically damaged components are visible then take a suitable screew driver & rotate 2 (or 3) Knobs on flyback transformer in clockwise or anticlockwise direction - very little ( 4 or 5 degrees ) - you have to do this without touching any cable or any part of your tv .......... then fix..... back side TV cover ........connect power cord - stay at a distance & switch on your tv ......... if you get picture atleast for few seconds then in your case only flyback transformer needs to be replaced otherwise complete mainboard has to be checked. to find other deffective component ............. so your tv problem is a harware problem - it cannot be solved using remote control or any buttons on your tv ..... if you are finding difficult to get it repaired then you can remove your tv mainboard with the help of some technician & send to me ...... i will replace deffective components .... & send back to you ....you only have to bare the shipping charges .....it will take maximum 12days (5days - to recieve + 2 days servicing + 5 days to send back to you )....

Picture went out and red light on the front by power button is blinking. When I turn TV on I can hear sound but no picture,, then TV turns off automatically after a few seconds.

Hi,
It seems problem with low screen voltage to three picture tubes in this rear projection tv.
If standby light blinks 5 times after three seconds long pause then adjust screen volts of each picture tube to solve this issue.
Screen volt adjustment requires expertise and job of professional so please call local tv repairman to help you.
Thanks.

My sony trinitron turns off by itself and then the stand by light blinks five times then pauses for like 4 seconds then flashes 5 times and repeats

Hi,
This is picture tube related problem and we call it incorrect white balance.
Adjust Screen Volts of picture tube and control knob wold be located on flyback transformer. If you have knowledge about tv and know that tv contains high voltage and you can take care of that then do it yourself or ask local tv repairman to fix it.
Thanks.

Hi,
Symptom shows Lamp is weak in result and causing restart of TV again and again. Your TV requires new lamp as per following part number...
A1085447A* LAMP BLOCK ASSY XL-2200U
It is available in Sony Accessories Store for $200 and replacement procedure is written in instruction manual of TV.

Always buy Sony original lamp for TV and avoid aftermarket / cheap lamp for TV safety.

Sony KV-36XBR250 - no picture, good sound

This is a common failure mode (which I now share), and has nothing to do with the picture tube or surge protection. From the forums I have searched to-date, it appears to be a failed component in the flyback circuitry, but Sony will not admit to an inherent defect. If anyone has ACTUALLY FIXED this problem, please post a reply. Guessing won't help anyone. Thanks.
