Broken Western Digital Elements 320gb external hard drive

Hello,
I accidentally dropped my external hard drive from a low table. It was connected to my laptop and I was using it at the time. It landed upside-down on a soft surface (my bed) and proceeded to start making an unfamiliar noise. The computer refused to recognise it and it now seems to be totally useless. It still powers up (the blue light comes on when it is connected to mains electricity) but it makes the nasty noise for a while then powers down. My warranty has run out so I can't send it back to Western Digital. Please help me!

Why a wd elements 320gb external hard drive only registers 298 gb when connected to computer?

Because the remaining space is for the file allocation tables. That tells the computer where to look on the hard drive to find the files. It's like an index for the hard drive.

Try running Scan Disk and defrag. Otherwise use a program like SpinRite to do a low level scan of the disk.

My Mac will not store data on my wd external hard-drive

Take it back to where you bought it, and get a replacement,
or at least get them to demonstrate that it _does_ work, when connected to a Mac computer (not a Windows computer).

I accidentally droppped my brand new 320gb WD Passport now it isn't working it lights up & it has a tick sound then stops spinning...pls help.. :(

Most likely you have damaged the actual harddrive, the ticking sound is NOT A GOOD HARDDRIVE SOUND! Contact western digital and tell them that your NEW harddrive is making this sound out of the box DO NOT MENTION DROPPING IT. They should RMA it as long as you really did just buy it.
