Recently, the ignition spark on my GE monogram 5 burner gas stove top, located in my kitchen island just started sparking on its own when all burner knobs were turned off. The first occurance, that I am aware of, was last night and the sparking continued on it's own for about an hour. When this first started happening I turned the burners on to see if I could stop the sparking and it just continued while the flames were on. I then turned the burners off and they kept sparking after a while the ignition spark stopped on its own about an hour later. This morning the sparking started at about 4:30 and has continued for the past 1/2 hr.
The stove top is about 20 years old, model that came with the house. I have had a bit of trouble getting the ignition switch to work in the past but have not experienced this problem before. How do I stop the sparking? How can I protect my home while I am away in case it starts sparking when I am not home?
Thanks for your help
The sparking is one of the switches under the knobs shorted you may be able to open the top and take a switch off 1 at a time and you can figure out what one is shorted.or you can just change all of them.
to stop this you may be able to just unplug the cooktop from under the top.if you unplug the cooktop you should be able to light the burners with a match.

I just experienced the same problem. Out of the blue the igniters started ticking without being on. It lasted about an hour as well. The unit is only 3 years old. any idea on what causes it.
