Question about HP Printers & Copiers

9 Answers

My hp photosmart c5200 All-in-One will neither print from the PC nor copy. It tells me there is a cartridge problem. When I switch on the PC and the printer, and check the status, the black cartridge is 75% full and the colour cartridge 50% full. Bur when I try to copy or print, the indicated level of the black cartridge drops to zero and the copy/print fails.

I have removed and replaced both print cartridges, and unplugged and reconnected the power. The printer now immediately records a cartidge problem, and the computer display indicates a problem with the black cartridge. The status indicator records no ink in the black cartridge. Clearly, no ink has been used since the black cartidge was recorded as 75% full. As the cartridge is a recenly installed (genuine) HP350XL, and our use of the printer is very moderate, the 75% reading is entirely realistic. Grateful for further advice.

  • jgmheal Nov 16, 2008

I have wiped the black cartridge contacts, and the contacts at the back of the black cartidge carrier, with a dry soft tissue, but he printer does not work and records a cartridge problem.

  • jgmheal Nov 16, 2008

    can you therfore advise?

  • jgmheal Nov 17, 2008

i styhere a common household equivalent of isopropyl alcohol, e.g. white spirit? In the meantime I have wiped the contacts again more thoroughly. The staus indicator now says the printer is ready and that the black cartridge is 75% full. But it still won't print, and the printer display still says cartridge problem? Any further ideas, or should i try a new cartridge?

  • jgmheal Nov 18, 2008

Thganks for your help. The printer is now working with a new HP 350 black cartridge. This seems to mean that the previous HP 350XL developed a fault when less than 25% used. Is it worthwhile to clean the contacts on that cartridge for storage and later use, and if so what should I use? Alternatively, am I entitled to a part refund?

Cleaning the contacts and re-seating the cartridge has been performed.
Access the printer setup menu and reset the printer to factory default.

"As the cartridge is a recently installed (genuine) HP350XL, and our use of the printer is very moderate, the 75% reading is entirely realistic."

Possibility of a cartridge gone bad OR the unit is experiencing hardware failure in reading it correctly.

To eliminate the cartridge as the culprit, the next logical thing to do is to replace the cartridge.

OK, since you have tried all the basic steps already, it could be one of two problems:
1. Faulty cartridge (although it is original, there can be problems with the contacts, etc). Try an altogether new cartridge, if possible. BTW, the recommended cartridge is a HP 74 Black Inkjet Print Cartridge (CB335WN) or HP 74XL Black Inkjet Print Cartridge (CB336WN)
2. Faulty contacts/circuitry on printer. Try to clean the contacts on the printer with a Qtip dabbed with isopropyl alcohol and see if this helps. If not, servicing may be required.

You could also try a clean install of the printer software. (It is different from a regular install) Details are here:
For XP (Replace the word 'camera' with 'printer' in the article. Procedure is the same)
For Vista

Hope that helps!

There is most likely a fault in the cartridge - cartridge carrier, I suggest you remove the carts, clean the contacts in both the carts and in the carrier, turn the printer off it not already, turn it on, it asks to enter the carts enter the carts and press ok when done, see if it works now.

First try power cycling the printer, do do the following:

    1. Remove both cartrige.

    2. Unplug printer USB and power cord .

    3. Turn computer off.

    4. Plug back everything and restart the printer and the computer.

    5. Reinstall cartridges.

    6. Test printer.
If that does not work than it is probably a faulty cartridge, replacing the whole cartridge set is better.

Put new cartridge in officejet j6410 and overnight it now says cartridge on left needs replacing. put old cartridge back in and it still says the same thing

These types of severe cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem", "cartridge in wrong slot", etc.) typically indicate the internal micro-electronics of the HP #74/75 cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge, are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on most models which use HP 74/75 cartridges. Where to plug in phone port for the HP c5280

Hello,

I'm sorry but the C5200 series printers do not have a phone port. It is not a Fax capable printer. It scans, copies, prints and does photo prints.

The only ports you have are for the USB cable and power cord.

Here is a manual link for reference.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Printer not printing properly

When you changed the cartridges, the printer automatically prits a test / calibration page. This page must be placed in the scanner, then you have to press the "scan" key (the green one). It will calibrate an align the system. Then you'll be able to print.
