Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a 3660 and a new Toshiba Portege Laptop. ActiveSync does the Tasks, Notes and Files, but for Calendar and Contacts it says "See device" and won't sync them. Any ideas? I've done soft reset on the ipaq.

Check to see if you can use the operating system you have with the device your trying to connect to, could be a compat issue with vista/xp or a driver, also try removing item and reinstalling. Contact mfg if all else fails for updates.

This couldn't be due to a malfunctioning fan, or any other hardware problem, it certainly sounds like a virus but it's hard to know. I advise using this guide t try and remove any viruses or malware.

Computer Maintenance

You may not realize it, but your computer and your car have something in common: they both need regular maintenance. No, you don't need to change your computer's oil. But you should be updating your software, keeping your antivirus subscription up to date, and checking for spyware. Read on to learn what you can do to help improve your computer's security.

Getting started

Here are some basics maintenance tasks you can do today to start improving your computer's security. Be sure you make these part of your ongoing maintenance as well.

* Sign up for software update e-mail notices. Many software companies will send you e-mail whenever a software update is available. This is particularly important for your operating system, your antivirus program, and your firewall.

* Register your software. If you still have send them in. And be sure to register new software in the future. This is another way for the software manufacturer to alert you when new updates are available.

* Install software updates immediately. When you get an update notice, download the update immediately and install it. (Remember, downloading and installing are two separate tasks.)

An ounce of prevention

A few simple steps will help you keep your files safe and clean.

* Step 1: Update your software
* Step 2: Backup your files
* Step 3: Use antivirus software and keep it updated
* Step 4: Change your passwords

Developing ongoing maintenance practices

Now that you've done some ground work,, it's time to start moving into longer term maintenance tasks. These are all tasks that you should do today (or as soon as possible) to get started. But for best results, make these a part of a regular maintenance schedule. We recommend setting aside time each week to help your computer secure.

* Back up your files. Backing up your files simply means creating a copy of your computer files that you can use in the even the originals are lost. (Accidents can happen.) To learn more read our tips for backing up information.

* Scan your files with up to date antivirus software. Use your antivirus scan tool viruses and worms. Also, check your antivirus program's user manual to see if you can schedule an automatic scan of your computer. To learn more, read our tips for reducing your virus risk.

* Change your passwords. Using the same password increases the odds that someone else will discover it. Change all of your passwords regularly (we recommend monthly) to reduce your risk. Also, choose your passwords carefully. To learn more, read our tips for creating stronger passwords.

Making a schedule

One of the best ways to help protect your computer is to perform maintenance regularly. To help you keep track, we suggest making a regular "appointment" with your computer. Treat it like you would any other appointment. Record it in your datebook or online calendar, and if you cannot make it, reschedule. Remember, you are not only helping to improve your computer, you are also helping to protect your persoanl information.

Good luck!

Hi there how i can fix my outlook erorr without loosing any data

It depends on what version of Microsoft office you use. In 2007 and above, there is a program called "scanpst.exe" that will work to resolve some issues with outlok. (You can locate this by doing a "search/find" for the file name.

You can find your outlook file and back it up too. The file by default is called "outlook.pst" You may want to make a copy before you attempt repair.

The location of the file can be found by opening up outlook. Clicking "File" --> "Data File Management" Click the tab for "Data file" this will display the location of your "outlook.pst" file (or if you chose another name, it will display it there)

Hope this helps.

How do i change the RAM on a toshiba portege M400 laptop?

The memory modules on Toshiba laptops are usually located at the back or under the keyboard depending the model.
If your laptop is still under warranty DO NOT open the case. This is only for people who are experienced with computers.

How can I connect a wireless adapter to my toshiba portege 660 cdt as there is not a port on it for the usb to fit in to

Hi,

I am assuming that your wireless adapter is USB and that your Toshiba Portege 660 CDT has a PCMCIA slot. If yes then you would need something like a PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card adapter as shown here. The added advantage is that you would have an extra USB port. Just pls make sure that the PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card adapter you will purchase is compatible with your laptop and has drivers appropriate for your Operating System.

Alternately, you can try swapping your USB WiFi for a PCMCIA version similar to this. Again, pls make sure that the PCMCIA Wireless network card you will purchase is compatible with your laptop and has drivers appropriate for your Operating System.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Help needed to get power connected.

There are a few possibilities.

If it's been plugged in continuously, the adapter may have simply overheated. Allowing it a few minutes to cool down without being plugged in could possibly fix it. Try unplugging the power cable from both the wall and the laptop for 30 minutes and give it another shot. This might work.

The other, less happy, possibility is that your adapter overheated to a critical point or was struck by an electrical surge and is damaged beyond repair. You can order a new one from a site like eBay or directly from Toshiba. Looks like you could get one from eBay for around 25$US incl. shipping but be careful and make sure you order the right thing.

Some eBay results: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=ac+adapter+portege
