There is a button I believe just above the USB port on the front of the machine. The picture is of a printer and there are two areas that will lit up. If the light is on the bar that is in the vertical direction, this indicates you are using the top feeder. If the bar is lit that is horizontal you are using the paper tray feeder. The Default is normally on the top feeder. Most people do not even realize there is a paper tray on these machines. They are hidden well.
To change tray settings simply push the gray button found under the picture of the printer with the vertical and hrizontal bars usually lit in green!

What does close the feeder tray mean

The Canon PIXMA iP4000 InkJet Printer has two paper sources for printing. Likely the top feeder tray is not completely closed (it is possible you do not have the printer set up to feed from both which may cause the error).

Canon PIXMA ip4000/paper jammed problem

Tackler- I dont think I have a solution but I know that the cassette should stick out about 5cm i.e. the cover just fits on nicely. I found with mine sometimes it needed a firm (but not hard) push in as obviously some sensor was not being tripped and it would just not pick up the paper in the tray. Have you tried using the top down feed? At least if that works you can print (and you can stack up a couple of pages).

Pixma ip5000

I had identical prob with a PIXMA IP4000. Eventually solved by turning upside down removing bottom feeder tray and gaining access to the four rubber rollers which pick up the paper. I rubbed each one with light sandpaper to roughen up the rubber, turning each one by hand trying to try to abrade all the surface. It did the trick.
