Windows will slowly stop functioning if it was never activated till all you get is the mandatory activation screen. The problem you have besides the the activation is that your network card is not connecting to internet. You no longer can get into Windows to remedy the problem, because of the activation screen. Catch 22!
If this is true, you only option is to wipe and re-install Windows.
Did you have Windows XP Professional on your laptop before you downloaded it from the internet? If not, that's your first problem.
When you reinstall or download a operating system you must use the one that is on the Certificate Of Authentication (COA) Sticker on the bottom of your laptop or inside the battery case. That's your key on it (the series of 5 letters and numbers).
If you use someone else's disk to install or download like you did you must make sure that it is the same operating system as yours. In other words, if your COA says Windows XP Home, then you can't install Windows XP Professional because when it comes time to activate it will fail.
Borrow a operating system disk that is the same as your COA from neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and reinstall windows. When it asks for the key, use the key that is on your COA Sticker then it will activate.
If you have to take it to a computer repair shop they should install the operating system for $60 or less if you have a valid COA Sticker.
The game "FATE" by Wild Tangent Games has an activation code system, used for verification on whether or not a person bought the game. You cannot play "FATE" without the activation code. Many activation codes are made and used at the same time; So there is not just "One code".
To obtain an activation code, you must buy the game, whether that is online, in real life at the store, or other methods of payment.
The activation system is online-based, therefore, you cannot activate your game without internet access. With this, Wild Tangent has made it so that, once an activation code is used, it may never be used again.
Because of that, if one were to post a code they have already used, it would be worthless to anyone else who might use it.

You can install the OS but you are not going to be able to activate the OS without the key. It will run for 30 days before it has to be activated. All you can do is call Microsoft and tell them you are installing it on the same computer it came on. They normally bend over backward to activate the operating system, and you should have no trouble. Remember, you have not installed it on any other computer, that is critical.

How do I downgrade?
Install a copy of Windows XP Professional with the product key that came with the copy, and then when you hit the activation screen - which is near the end of the installation process - select the activate by phone option rather than the online method. You'll likely end up talking with a live rep; tell him that you're downgrading from Vista to XP, and give him the Vista product key. The rep is supposed to walk you through the rest.
