thanks for that. i have gone through all settings on my laptop (which is connected wirelessly) and set them the same on my pc except for the network key which just shows dots. on my laptop there are 8 dots in the network key box. you say it must be a minimum of 10.

now im confussed. should i reset the router and start again? is that easy?

    Cheers.

    Stellyx,

i have been in my router wireless settings. i have a 64 bit encryption key that i have written down, it is 10 characters using 1-9 and a-f.

i have been into network connections then right clicked wireless network connect 4 to get properties.then clicked wireless networks tab, then in the network key box typed the 10 digit encryption key and it won't connect but is does accept there is a wireless router there. i am confused with the network key because my lap top that works with the wireless route only has an 8 digit network key. and i don't know what it is because it is shown as dots.

i'm so confussed i'm hitting the reset button now.

    Thanks for your help.

  • servin Nov 15, 2008

the lap top is not the problem - it connects. my pc doesn't.

  • servin Nov 15, 2008

i have no security ticked. i thought i had found the problem, the pc mac address was missing. so i added it but still no go.

  • servin Nov 15, 2008

i have reset my router and have an unsecured wireless network.

    the laptop works fine

    the pc still won't connect

  • servin Nov 16, 2008

the pc is now connected to the wireless router.

    there were 2 problems

    1. the wireless card in the pc had an incorrect setting. under the advanced tab in the configure wireless adaptor setting the network type wasn't on 802.11.

    2. the mac address for the pc wasn't set on the router.

    thanks for your help Stellyx.

Hi servin,

Lets start off with the easy answer:

American Standard Code for Information Interchange = ascii
and its pretty much any character you can make with the keyboard

Now down to business. What the laptop is asking for is the wireless password.
If this is your router and you have never set a network key (a password) then chances are that it still has the default network key.
You can find this string of numbers on the router itself (usually on the bottom of the router near a upc symbol or the serial number) sometimes theres three or four numbers down there so just keep in mind that the minimum it can be is 10.

I hope this helps, if you cant get it just right there are more steps we can take to get you up and running feel freee to ask me, and please dont forget to rate me.

From what im hearing you have yet to interact with the router itself. You see the router also has a setup page that is accessible either through software installed on the pc or through your internet explorer browser. I just want to be clear here: you have to talk directly talk tirectly to the router.

In order to do that you need to consult the browsers manual. Its very diferent for each browser so anything i say here could be wrong. but for example when i want to change the name of my wireless network or the password i open up Internet explorer and type 192.168.0.1.( It will be diferent for you most likely.)
What this does is put me in direct communication with my router on my little home network and the router itself has software that lets me change its all of its settings.

Ok that said, the answer to your question about "is it that easy?" the answer is yes. but what happens when you reset it is that it returns to a factory settings state. However since it seems that you have not changed any settings on it, it might not do that much good.

this is what i would do.

    1. I would find out how to access/setup my router in the manual or online.

    2. I would then access the router and find my wireless settings in the interface

    3. I Would then change the password (the wep key) rember 1234567890 can be your password if your not too worried about security.. or some combination of the like

    4. I would then save the settings and exit
then its just a question of you going to your laptop, finding the netwrok and entering 1234567890.

follow those steps and youll be wireless in no time. Oh and before i forget... anyone else that wants onto your wireless network will also need the password. So dont make it something yoll forget.
If your still having troubles donst hesitate to ask.

I hope this helps, please dont forget to rate me.

its just s temporary suggestion while we fix this but:

go into your router settings again and disable the encryption. what im saying is to remove the password.

its just a settings problem that you and i will work out as we go along. so go into your router settings and make it so that anyone (even you can connect without a password.
the resong were doing this is to see if the laptop can actually connect to the wireless network. Once we establish this we are one step closer to the solution.

    1- go to router settings.
    2- click on wireless
3- under the wep security ( or something of the like) click off the need for a password (usually a checkbox)
4- try to connect with your laptop
5- if this works please remember that while this settings scenario is active then anyone can connect to your network (more of a disclaimer than anything else :)

Did you enter the security key (password)? It may be your laptop? Try resetting the D-Link to default settings and connecting to the laptop. They reconfigure the SSID and Security Key. Write down the info for future use. Here's a user Manual: http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/dir-600-wireless-n-150-home-router

What is my network sercurity key.

The Network security key is -

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

Hi, I have a dlink DSL-G604T router, wlan light not on.

Hello there!

Only thing that can cause your wlan light not working consistantly or with some blinks (which is normal thing) is bad lan cable which leads from your ADSL modem to your wlan entrance on your wireless router, please check that cable in order to fix that problem. Cable doesnt need to be coaxial so it can have 2 different lan sets (2 poles of exits male and female exit). Thats it ! =)

Please rate solution! =)

Laptop can't connect to DSL-G604T

You need to configure your router and use WPA encryption so that all accessing device can connect to it.

The obvious reason why the dell laptop can't connect is because of the WPA encryption set. It is different compared with what your router is actually broadcasting: WPA2.

So you can choose one of the 2 things to alter. Change your router's WPA2 encryption to WPA or change your Dell's setup to WPA2.

Adding a wired computer or device to the network.

If you router is already set up and you want to add a new computer, you don't need to run the set up CD for the router again.
If you are adding a desktop or any other device to the router which will always be connected to the router with the Ethernet cable, then in this case you don't need to do anything.
You can just connect the Ethernet cable between the router and the computer and it should work.
If you are not able to go online even when it is connected properly then check IP address of the computer.

Adding a wireless computer or device to the network.

If you router is already set up and you want to add a new computer, you don't need to run the set up CD for the router again.
If you want to add a new wireless device ( laptop or any other wireless device) to the network, then you should know all the wireless settings of the router. What wireless settings do you need to know ?
You should know the wireless network name ( SSID ), wireless channel and the wireless security password
( network key ). Once you get all the wireless settings of the router , you will need to connect to the wireless network on the computer. when you try to connect to the network , you will see your wireless network in the list. You just need to select your network and connect to it. If it is secured then you will need to enter the network key and you will be able to go online.
To check the wireless settings of the router , you will need to access the router set up page. On the set up page you will find all the wireless settings of the router.

How do I reset my security with the dlink 2310

To change your router wireless security
  • Support site here http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=470
  • User guide here http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=WBR-2310&tab=3
Connect your PC to the router with a cable to one of the LAN connections - Now you need to Log into the setup of the router - to do that open a web browser, use Internet explorer (some routers setup pages do not work correctly with other browsers) In the browser address bar - 192.168.0.1 Enter the user name (admin) and your password. Leave the password blank by default. Now you can goto the wireless section or secruity section and set the type of encyption to WEP, WPA, WPA-PSK etc and then make up your own password. See Page 25 of the User Manual
On the PC Double click on the wireless connection in the system tray (bottom right hand side of screen) and then connect manually to your wireless signal - you will be asked for the password you set in the router.
Now you are connected.
You may need to remove any old wireless profiles you have on the PC/Laptops Wireless Profiles - Vista/Windows 7: http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=214 - delete the wireless profiles Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks Delete the profiles you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to --------------- Wireless Profiles - XP http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=186 - delete the preferred networks start> control panel> network connections> right click on the wireless connection listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
