It is most likely a bad CD. Try other CD's, and if they work fine, then you have a scratched (visible or not) CD. If very few or no other CDs work, then you have either a bad CD drive or a bad Driver.

Try going to the CD drive's website and find an updated driver. If you already have the latest driver, try re-installing it, then restart your computer. If none of that works, then you should try a different CD drive.

Also, if your not an administrator, try accessing the drive withe Admin privileges. Also, try the CD at school or work, or a different computer and see if it works.

Good luck,

If windows is recognizing the cd drives but not showing them I'd try a windows repair might be the fastest way to a sure fix. Put your XP disc in and walk through the steps, when it finds your Windows installation press R to repair it. (should keep all your files / installed programs)

sounds to be a bug in the system

ensure the program is working, goto system restore and turn it off
turn back on again, this will remove all the old ones, they could have the bug in them,

create a restore point now, then download "combofix.exe"
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

run this

it gives a report when finished, the top section shows deletions, this is the stuff it found

Ethernet Controller is missing

You are unable to use the Ethernet, VGA etc. because you have not installed the drivers for the same.

You might have received a Drivers CD(it will read "Drivers and Utilities") which will be in blue color, when you got the computer from Dell.
In case if you haven't received it you can contact Dell on 1-800-624-9897 and request for a Driver CD. I guess this Dimension model is @ End of Life (I mean no more produced by dell) you might have to download the drivers from Dell's support site (www.support.dell.com) you will have to get it downloaded on a different computer and copy on a CD or a Flash drive.

Once you got all the drivers. First extract them in a separate folder

Go to Device manager
Right click on the Ethernet controller (where you see a yellow exclamation)
Click update drivers
Show the path where you have the driver files

Your problem is indeed related to a software setting. When your DVD writer software was installed, it automatically sets itself the default program to play certain files(like music or movies, etc) If you want to "choose" a program to be used for your music, you have to right click the file you want to open, and select the option "Open with..." Then just select the application you want to use. If you want to make it your default application from now on, simply check the box at the bottom that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" Problem solved..! To create an Autorun-enabled CD-ROM, proceed as follows:
  • Create an Autorun.inf File
    Autorun.inf is a text file that is located in the root folder of your application CD-ROM. It provides to the computer the name and the location of the startup program for your application that is installed when the CD-ROM is inserted. The Autorun.inf file can also contain optional information including the following:
  • The name of a file that contains an icon that represents your application's CD-ROM drive. This icon appears in Windows Explorer instead of the standard drive icon.
  • Additional commands for the shortcut menu that appears when the user right-clicks the CD-ROM icon. You can also specify the default command that runs when the user double-clicks the icon. Autorun.inf files are similar to .ini files.
  • The [autorun] section contains the default Autorun commands. All Autorun.inf files must have an [autorun] section.
  • icon: Specifies the path and the file name of an application-specific icon for the CD-ROM drive.
  • open: Specifies the path and the file name of the startup application.

Autorun.infThe following is an example of a simple Autorun.inf file. It specifies Filename.exe as the startup application. The second icon represents the CD-ROM drive instead of the standard drive icon.
[autorun]
open=Filename.exe
icon=Filename.ico

DVD drive bay

yes you should be able to play CD on the DVD reader.
Dimension 2400 have drive slide mounted on the side of the hard drive, cd drive and floppy. they are different for each device. you need the 2 side mount for the dvd. in order to mount them in the Dell.
the drive is inserted from the inside of the box toward the front. The front panel will prevent the device from pop out.
yes, 3 party DVD, CD drive will be shorter and fater that what Dell porvide, but it will work, al long as the opening is accessable.
get the HP DVD driver.
