Connect one wire to R or Rh.
Connect the other wire to W.
This should allow you to use the thermostat with battery power.

The backlight is not working on my newly installed Honeywell RTH2310 thermostat.

Hello. The thermostat needs a COMMON wire. The letter C on the back of the thermostat. In the unit it runs there is a COMMON connection for that reason.I hope there is a spare wire strand to use because a lot of thermostats don't need a common to work (uses battery)but honeywell does.

More information would help but I believe that you are trying to hook up a programmable thermostat to your old heating system which is what? Oil forced air, heat pump, gas? Give me more info and I think that I can help you.

I just purchased a Honeywell RTH2310 and cant get it to work. I have a gas furnace that has two wire R and White. I tried connecting to Red-Rh and W for white, with and without the jumper for Rh and Rc....

red is 24volt power, white is load,I.E. relay, touch the red and wht wires together, the furnace should start, if it don't the problem is the heater, Rheat-Rcool you have a heat/ac thermostat, no ac forget Rc,try turning thermostat all the way up, dig up a multi-meter or powered light tester, touch Rh with one wire of tester, touch the other wire to different terminals until it lights, hook up your wires, you should have heat

My husband just installed the Honeywell RTH2310 thermostat. The fan turns on, but the furnace does not. What's our next step? (It's a natural gas furnace and he made sure that it is on correct h/e setting....

need to make sure there is a jumper between RC and RH if the red wire is connected to the RC terminal the heat wont work you will need a jumper wire to tie the RC and RC together with the red wire.

New rth2310 themostat does not blow cool air

I don't believe you're going to get the new one to work -- sounds like it doesn't have enough control wires to operate your HVAC system. If it is designed to operate a 7-wire system, the documentation should show how to hook the 4-wire tstat so it will work.
