Question about Televison & Video
SOURCE: Off Air?
The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.

The first step you sohuld take, in my opinion, is to have the cable company come out and test your line levels to make sure there isn't a lossy connection somewhere.
You might also try rebooting your cable box by turning it off, unplugging it for a minute, then plugging it back in. I have this issue with the same box and I believe the problem may be that the live recording for pausing and rewinding gets bogged down after a certain period of time. I've had four of these boxes and had this issue with every one of them. They seem to have a problem when the cable company pushes an update sometimes that corrupts the firmware and causes problems (my fourth box just failed tonight, that makes four failures in about eight months).
