Its very simple. You will find the DIMM slots(where you install the RAM) on the motherboard. Just plug the memory into the slot and use the latches on either side of the latch to lock it in place.
This is what a DIMM slot looks like.

How do I open my sony pcv-v1

1. Ground Yourself
2. Unplug everything and press the power button for 10 sec to
discharge any residual power.
3. Place PC face down on bench with base over edge.
4. Swing PC unit forward and unscrew the case retaining screw on both
sides of the PC unit, swing unit other way and remove other two
screws.
5. Case can be loosened, pull large cover up and remove both sides.
Parts are then exposed.
6. A shiny metal box covers the memory on the left side of the PC unit. 7. Remove tape that retains it,slide and lift off from the edge facing you.
8. Memory slots are then exposed....insert and reassemble PC.

Good Luck!

I have added 256MB memory to my Sony PCV-RX470DS desktop but it still only shows 256MB that was already installed. Do I need to change anything in BIOS or make any kind of hardware change via jumpers or...

You may need to re-seat the memory module.

Shutdown your PC, remove the newly added memory module. and re-plug it back in, this time when you install it make sure you hear a click noise when installing it to ensure its properly installed.

I doubt you need to update the BIOS to support more memory.

Otherwise you may have a dud memory module.

When installing/removing memory ensure you are properly earthed so that you don't zap and kill the memory.

How to upgrade RAM memory what to buy and is anything else be upgraded before this

It is a very simple thing to upgrade your Ram which is a great idea since you have only 512 MB. I suggest you buy at least 1 GB or more if you can afford it. Go to the link I am posting and let them scan your computer. They will tell you exactly what you can install and the price. This is a reputable site I use all the time. This will require a download of the scanner tool which is perfectly safe. http://www.crucial.com/

Problem with Sony Vaio pcv-rx860 (screen goes black at startup)

I would suggest first to try to take one stick of memory out and try to boot up the pc. Sometimes, one or both of the memory sticks can go bad or the memory slot on the motherboard itself can go bad. If that is not the case I would then remove all of the usb connected to the computer and last i would test the power supply.
