My brightness box used to pop up randomly and fluctuate. I had to hold in the right arrow to have it go up to 100 but then it would just go back to 0 unless I kept holding it in and sometimes it would eventually go off. Now the buttons below the screen for the menu to get in to adjust brightness and contrast and such do not work at all. What can I do to get my brightness back? It's a real pain not being able to see anything. (The last time the box popped up it went down to 0 brightness and wouldn't let me put it back up to 100, so my computer has been stuck at 0 brightness for a good many months now...).

Below are instructions to adjust brightness on HP laptop
Press the "Fn" key with the computer turned on and hold the key.
Press the "F7" or "F8" key on some HP laptops, which are
printed with a small sun icon on the key. The sun icon is filled on the
function key for dimming the laptop. The other key is printed with a
hollow sun icon for brightening the screen.
Press the "Fn" and left arrow keys together on some HP
laptops to turn down the brightness. The "Fn" and right arrow key will
increase brightness. Press and release the right arrow key repeatedly,
while holding down "Fn," to decrease the screen brightness slowly, or
hold the keys to darken the screen as low as the setting will go.
For HP Monitors
Press and hold the down arrow key on the front panel of the
monitor below the screen to turn down the brightness on the external
monitor to the lowest setting.
Repeatedly press the down arrow button to dim the monitor gradually.
Press the up arrow key on the monitor to increase brightness.
The easiest way to increase the brightness is to hold down the (Fn) key, on the bottom left of the keyboard next to the ctrl key. While holding down (Fn) tap the right arrow key to increase the brightness. The left arrow key can be used to decrease the brightness. If this doesn't work, you may have a bad LCD screen.
Look at your keyboard some of the keys have blue symbols on them, that's the second function. At the bottom left of your keyboard next to the control key there's a button that says Fn on it hold that down and then press one of the other buttons to use the second function. The brightness control is the up and down arrows. Hold Fn and press up or down to change the brightness. Also if your laptop is set to a lower power setting the display wont be as bright. Click on the little battery symbol at the bottom right hand corner of the screen a little menu will pop up that says select a power plan if its set to power saver your screen wont be as bright.
Press the Menu key on the Monitor to bring up the dialog box press Menu again because it defaults to the Brightness Icon. You will see the lower half of the dialog box change color. Use the left or right arrow to move off of Acer eColor Management to the User setting. Then press Menu again to edit contrast or brightness. User the left and right arrows on the Monitor to move to the desired adjustment, press Menu to allow adjust then arrow left for less or arrow right for more.
You really just keep moving between the Menu and arrow til you get it right.. I definitely needed to turn down the brightness on my monitor.
This problem is usually caused due to a faulty microswitch in the brightness button. To rectify this, you'll have to change this switch.
Get your monitor serviced by a qualified service personnel.
Hope this solves your problem. For more help or clarifications, please reply. Thanks.
Have you tried using the manual controls on the keyboard for changing the brightness (Fn right arrow)? I think the epower management is crap, usually I just uninstall them all and adjust things manually.
