This might be the text box function of the closed caption decoder. Make sure the closed captioning is off on the tv.

I accidentally changed the settings on my remote control using the on screen menu from dvd1 to dvd2

I'm not sure the question - perhaps your TV is set to the DVD2 input and it's not a DVD issue.
If so, using your TV remote, push the "input" button until you reach your desired input.

Can't see "Setup" screen, or any other screens on t.v. monitor

There should be a tv vcr button on the remote control. What you done was you accidently shut off the VCR function. If you hit that button again the tv vcr button it will come back on.

Black box on top of screen during HDD playback mode

Problem solved! Thanks Panasonic Tech Support!!

In case anyone else has this problem, I'll tell you what I found out. This model DVD recorder does not have closed captioning functionality at all. So if this happens to yours, it is not the DVD recorder causing the problem. It is a setting on either your TV, cable box, or whatever else you have hooked up to it.

In my case, my daughter must have accidentally hit the "Text" option on our TV's caption menu. I changed that option back to its original setting, and the mysterious black box is gone.

Reset to factory defau;ts

Small print in the manual says to hold down the 100/P.Scan button on the remote to toggle between progressive and interlaced. This was after I blindly tried to follow the setup screens in the manual and found that the manual doesn't match the exact screens (must be a firmware difference?) in the manual.

Also found that the factory default instructions in the manual do not include a yes/no confirmation screen.

To solve "progressive mode" or any other problem on DV-266, just reset all setting to default, as follows;
Using buttons in front panel (not from remote control); - Switch off your DVD Player. - Press & hold STOP button, and press STANDBY/ON (power) button.
Good Luck & enjoy your Pioneer again.....

Some sort of box across the screen

Try to look at your captions on your tv...you probbally have them set on text 1 or 2 which cause the box to pop up also why it goes away when you push a button. Turn all caption functions of your tv off...cc and text this should take care of the problem.
