How to clean coffee spill from Toshiba laptop

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L300D
Model: Satellite PSLC8A-02200Y

Issue: I have managed to spill some coffee on the keyboard of abovelaptop. Spills are not covered by warranty so Toshiba won't repair it. Due to spill, some keys have become stuck so when it starts up, it makes a beeping noise. The only issue caused by the spill is sticky keys so I need to clean the keyboard. The laptop was left to dry for two weeks already.

I need step by step direction on how to open the laptop (with pictures and details) and then how to clean the coffee. Please send details about this model only - I have looked at internet and there are many related model but their directions don't work with this particular model.

Please send a detailed solution and not just one two advice.

Shane,

You can use a qtip with rubbing alcohol to clean up the spilled coffee.

Dip the qtip in the alcohol and squeeze out any Excess. Use the qtip to clean up the mess. Then use the dry end to dry the cleaned spot as much as possible. You may need many Qtips depending on how much of a mess you have. Once you have the Laptop cleaned leave it apart for about 10 - 15 minutes to allow any residual alchohol to evaporate. You should now be able to reasseble your laptop and give it a try.

Hope this helps you.
Dave

The best would be to use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol, cheap and easily available). It cleans well, and dries almost instantly..Since you got the keyboard open, this would be the way to go..

You could also try the wet-wipes, same formula, but with a deodrant as well :)

If you do it this way, you should not have to open it. All I need from you is to answer one question: When you say the keys are sticking, do you mean that the key is stuck in a pressed position or the key can stilled pop up and be pressed down? `If it is stuck in a pressed position, then you just need to get something thin and flexible like a credit card to get into the crack between the keys. To pull up the stuck one, insert the flexible object into the crack and slightly wiggle it until the key pops up. Do that with all of them. Then get a can of keyboard dust remover with a straw and aim it in the cracks that were beside the stuck keys. Spray it in each area for about six seconds and try pressing the key to see if it sticks anymore. The condensation that comes from the spray should free it up making it stick no more. This should work.

You can use this website to see how to clean keyboard in short: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxHEqyhWl...

If you do not see it in the video, you will need compressed air, cotton swabs, and water. You can wash the buttons off in the water and dip the cotton swabs in the water. Use those to clean the area under where the keys go and in the key button sensor to get the dried coffee up. Then put the keys back and test it. It should work.

Hi shane,

you are very lucky that nothing was damaged. there is an easy way for you to clean you keyboard from the "sticky stuff". there is a quick drying foam that is ironically called foam cleaner that you can get at at this link. Its cheap like 6 bucks and comes with some goodies. It is very easy to use.
This will lift any junk of the keys and has the added benefit of being anti-bacterial as well.
One can would last a normal user for a long time and it does come in handy.
It will unstick the keys and make them as clean as they were when you bought your machine.

I hope this helps, and please dont forget to rate.

Note that there are 3 pages on the guide the links are on the bottom, it should be helpful.

Is there anything special about the beeps? short? long? computers report hardware errors with beeps if you could count the beeps short and long and then use the add a comment button so I can respond to you, if you repost the problem you will most likely get another expert offering some other advice.

Thanks, Ekse

This solution might sound funny u can try and it will work , cover the keys with the dry rice and leave it for few hours , as rice have tendency to absorve water, leave it for a hour and it will absorb the water,
2nd i wd suggest not to dismandle the product at it will damage more, remove the battries and take a hair dryer and set it low and blow from distance as direct heat will damage the circuit, and blow for some time.
or try  vaccum cleaner

Do not start the laptop

Try first cleaning the keaboard with wet cleaning tissues, you can by the ones for computers at any computer shop or use the ones for skin care, providing that no liquid gous inside the circuits.

If coffee spilled inside and you already tried starting and did not start, then you can remove the keyboard. being very careful not to damage the ribbon cable, and leave the laptop to dry.
If you want to clean the boards you use circuit cleaning solution, that you can buy at Circuitcity.

If you have not done a similar job before , it is better calling a technician.

How do i replaced the charger socket in my l300d toshiba laptop

I have come across this issue in a number of Toshiba laptops recently. The DC jack assembly (which includes a wiring harness and the DC jack) actually breaks away from the bottom laptop housing. What I have done is to glue the jack back in place using a hot glue gun. You need to be careful and observe how the right speaker (located on the top housing) is situated. Be liberal on the glue and make sure the jack is encased in the glue. I have not had any units returned after this was done.

Good luck
