Ink problem with Brother Fax 1860C

I have a Brother 1860C fax machine. I was overseas for 16 months, so it was not used all that time, and was 1 week old before I left. I came back and I was getting low ink messages. I suspect the ink dried up. I pulled out the cartridges to inspect and reinstalled them. Now I get a message that the yellow cartridge is missing! It is not missing.

This machine has black, yelloy, cyan and magenta cartridges.

I switched the yellow and cyan cartridges just to see if the error changes, and I still get the 'no yellow cartridge' error.

Our fax machine currently keeps saying the yellow ink cartridge is empty and we cannot do anything to recieve faxes until that cartridge is replaced. I refuse to replace it; the cartridge is not empty! I have already replaced all the ink cartridges and we have been printing all our faxes in black and white yet supposedly our color ink cartridges are empty?! Ridiculous! Who created a machine that won't work unless all ink cartridges are new and installed? My black ink is fine, why can't I just print in black???

I've had the problem before where you can't print black unless all color cartridges are installed AND I've had the reverse happen: you can't print color unless the black ink cartridge is installed...um, HP and other injet printers will still print if you are out of one or the other so I know the technology exists....Sounds like a ploy from Brother to get you to buy color ink cartridges every three months... Absurd!

The machine detects the ink by shining a light through the rib in one edge of the ink cartridge. Apparently yellow is close enough to nothing at all, that the sensors get a little out of whack. Here's how to reset the sensors:

  1. Get a dinner plate or something to set the ink cartridges on, that won't absorb ink, and is easy to wash.
  2. Unplug the machine's power.
  3. Open the machine and remove all four inks, setting them on the plate.
  4. Close the machine.
  5. Plug in power.
  6. The machine will begin it's start-up procedure and complain about the missing inks. It will tell you to replace one specific ink first (black, I think).
  7. Follow the instructions on the display, installing one ink color at a time. When all four inks are in, it should be OK.
Use Brother inks. They have a little black floater in that rib, and some of the aftermarket inks have had a problem with the floater sticking.
There may be another problem causing this. The ink may really be low, or the sensor board may be off its mounts in the machine. But the routine above is quick & easy, and it fixes the problem more than half the time. You can't run without any of the colors, because that means air bubbles are getting into the ink tubes, and that can lead to dried ink blocking the nozzles.
This is unrelated, but when you peel the sealing tape from the bottom of the ink ctg., do it slowly. Brother has found that sometimes, when you strip the tape off too fast, a little glue remains stuck in the nozzle, blocking it. If that happens, dig the glue out carefully with a pin & it will be fine.

Brother mfc-7840w won't receive fax

The first thing that I would try multiple people to ask them to fax you.Sometimes the 2 machines don't "sync".This is a toll free fax test number that I always use to check my machines..1-888-473-2963.Just write the words "FAX TEST" in large letters on a blank sheet of paper..fax it to that number...leave the line open...you should get a fax back in about a minute. If you get a fax back...your machine is fine...let me know if this was helpful....thanks.

HOW TO SEND FAX INTERNATIONALLY

Sending a fax to another county is easy - almost as easy as sending a fax to someone in your own country. The only difference is the phone number that you'll dial.
When sending a fax from one U.S. city to another, you dial a 1, then the area code, then the seven-digit phone number. When sending a fax from the U.S. to another country, you usually dial 011, then the country code, then a city code (which is like an area code), then the phone number. (The phone number isn't necessarily seven digits.) Check out the web site www.HowToCall.info, which will give you the specific country and city codes for the place that you're trying to send a fax to.
Other than figuring out the phone number, faxing internationally is identical to faxing domestically. Fax machines in other countries use the same protocols as ones in the United States, so you should have no difficulty communicating with a foreign fax machine. Older fax machines and noisy overseas phone lines may cause the transmission to take a bit longer than you're used to, but it should get there.
The first time you send a fax to another country, it might be a good idea to listen in as the fax machine dials. On some fax machines, you can press the "Dial" button to hear the dial tone, and dial the number manually. Listen for the ring and fax tone, then press the Start button to send the fax. You might want to do this the first time you send a fax overseas, just to make sure it's working as expected.

If you are having difficulty sending a fax overseas due to possible
interference on the phone line, we recommend that you turn on the
Overseas Mode. After you send a fax using this feature, the feature
will turn itself off.
1 If it is not illuminated in green, press (Fax).
2 Load your document.
3 Press Menu/Set, 2, 2, 7.
4 Press ▲ or ▼ to select On (or Off).
Press Menu/Set.

Your manual gives this information also on page 3-13

Good Luck

How to set up for confirmation sheet.

You can use the reports button or menu button to reports, and print out the user settings list. It shows where the settings are, and what they're set on. In fax setup you can select frequency of report printing, but the Brother machines always give a printout if a fax fails.

Using MagicJack for faxing; however, Brother MFC 290C is stating poor line condition - why? Also say's low ink Magenta - would that create this problem?

I had the same problem trying to send out faxes out using my Brother MFC 7340. I use a magic jack phone line. Page 106 of the user manual says if sending via VOIP phone line, you should press menu, then 2, 0, 1 to select "Basic (for VOIP) mode. Then press ok. Then press stop/exit. This cuts the modem speed down to 9600 bps and turns ECM off. Then retry to send the fax. I did that and can now send and receive faxes.

Receiving faxes

First make sure your line cable is plugged into the correct place. Most Brother machines have a plug for Line and a plug for Extension (EXT), make sure it's plugged into "Line".

Go into the menu on your Brother machine and select Fax, then Setup Receive and then select Easy Receive. This will usually solve most recieve problems.
Brother machines come with s default of 4 rings before they will answer, make sure none of your other devices (such as an answering machine) are set to a lower number of rings or the fax machine will never grab the line.

If you have distinctive ring, make sure you have it set up in the machine. There is a section in the owners manual for setting up discinctive ring.

If the machine grabs the line and goes through the motions but nothing comes out on the page (no black print) then make sure you are using a Brother ink cartridge (not refilled or generic) and print out the test page using the "ink" button. Allow the machine to clean a few times and see if the test page prints out correctly. If you are using refills or a generic black, you might have premanently damaged the print head. In this case take it to a service centre to have the head tested.
