You have a problem with the GPS unit that is going to require service by a professional. It has at least one bad component in the power supply of it that is causing the unit to blow the fuse in the car. It is unlikely that the battery is causing that. It could be in the charging circuit, but without a multimeter and then opening it up and checking some components, there is no way to figure out exactly what is causing it. If you have a multimeter and are familiar with electronics it may be able to be fixed by you. If you are not able to do this you should just take it to a service center. If it is under warranty you should not even open it up, it will void your warranty, just take it to a service center.

How is your warranty on the garmin? I would suggest if its under warranty to remove it from your car and send it over to garmin, contact them first for free warranty repairs, also check your cables, if your cables are cut or if there a short circuit.. incase the cable is cut it might blow out the fuse.. thats one possible reason for blowing out the fuse.

I think you will have to replace the battery.

It is located within the unit. However, I wouldn't recommend opening it up yourself. Its best to take it to service center for repairs, as there is very complicated circuitry within.

My Garmin Nuvi 52LM will not turn on when I start the car with the cord in place.

1. Make sure that the charger outlet is supplying +12VDC. Try another device by plugging it into the outlet and seeing if it powers on.

2. Make sure that the fuse in the charger tip is not blown. The tip usually unscrews. It is spring loaded so be careful that the fuse, spring and power tip are not lost. Check the fuse. It should read 0 ohms with an ohmmeter. If it is glass hold it up to the light and see if the wire inside is open (broken). If the fuse is bad, replace it with the same value.

3. Make sure that the charger outlet is controlled by your ignition. If the the unit is on all of the time, regardless of the ignition setting, then the outlet is wired directly to the battery via a fuse.

4. Does the unit power up on its internal battery? Is the charger working? If it is bad, the unit will not power up when plugged into a 12VDC outlet.

Charges at home on a usb port but not in the car

Hi Carl,

You should check your car's fuses to see if the one that supplies power to your USB charger is still good. If you're not sure how to do this, you could try plugging a different device into it and see if it works. If it doesn't - you'll need to inspect the fuse or wiring. (you could also try the charger in a different port or different car to see if the issue is tied to the charger).

If the other device does work, it is possible that the charger has a built in fuse. If the charger is the type that plugs into your cigar lighter, you may find the the tip holds the fuse. The tip may reveal the fuse if unscrewed from the body or may require a screw driver to open the body. Either way, you'll need to ascertain if there is a fuse in it and if so, check its condition.

Sometimes, the charger needs to be aligned a certain way in the cigar lighter / power port (or outlet) due to the way some automakers and device manufacturers design the connections. Repeatedly remove and replace the plug in the lighter / port. Each time, turn the the plug slightly so that it takes 6 to 8 insertions to rotate all the way around in the outlet. This should provide at least one position that allows the plug to make the required contact in the lighter / power port.

Lastly, make sure that there is no foreign object / debris in the outlet, that the the plug fits snugly in the outlet, the the plug's tip has a spring pushing it forward and that the plug is fully inserted into the outlet.

Hopefully, one of these suggestions will get it working. Good luck!

Tom Tom will not turn on or charge

Hello
Check the battery first. For some batteies, even though they will show proper voltage when we measure it with a multimeter, but the current carrying capacity will be very low. For such batteries, charging time will be very low and aso the sorking time. If battery is good, it will take some time to charge. We can determine the ampere capacity of the battery with relating this time.
The second possibility is a blown out protection fuse inside the GPS. Just check the battery first. If it is found OK, the fuse must be replaced. But before replacing the fuse, you have to check the reason for the fule blow. Otherwise, the fuse we insert new also will blow up, if there is any short circuit inside the circuit board of the GPS.
So it is adviced to get the fuse repalced by anu well experienced service technican, after proper check; if the fuse is blown. It will be best ot get it repaired by the authorised TomTom service center, because, the some components; if has damaged; cannot get from open electronic spare part market, as most of the GPS components are rare to get from open market. OK.

Our GPS keeps saying low battery and then going off. thought it was the cigarette lighter that wasn't working, got a new fuse, but it still says low battery. opened the back, now what

Let me see if I understand your question.

You had your GPS plugged into your vehicle power outlet (AKA cigarette lighter) and you thought you were charging the battery all along. However, your power outlet was not "live" (you checked?) so you replaced the fuse. Your GPS was telling you LOW BATTERY and turned off, and that was why you checked the fuse and it was blown, right?

So now, your power outlet is hot (you checked it right) and you have a good 12 volts DC. You have your GPS plugged in and it still says LOW BATTERY and shuts off. Is there a fuse in the GPS plug? Have you checked for this? Are you able to check the voltage where the cord plugs into the GPS with a volt meter?

There is that possibility that everything is well with your power supply - but you must check and assure you have power. If it is, and your GPS still says LOW BATTERY, I would be inclined to take it for a drive with it plugged in and turned off. At the end of the drive, try it again. (Is your power outlet HOT when the car is not running?) If all is well with the power and you have tried to charge it, the battery may not be accepting the charge due to a battery fault. I don't know if you have the tools required to change the battery or not. If you do and if you can find the battery (there are lots of batteries available at many sites) and it does not cost more than a replacement GPS, I would suggest you give it a try. What the heck, it doesn't work now so you don't have much to loose except the price of the battery.

You might find the battery you reqire at a FixYa.com advertiser to be found here on this page. Your support of FixYa.com advertisers will be appreciated by the site.

If I missed the ball, please provide a little more detail on the matter and I will try again.

There it is all in under 10 minutes.

Will not stay on when not plugged into the car outlet?

first make sure that the device is indicating that the battery is being charged or that the battery is fully charged. this is indicated on the menu screen by the battery icon as being 4 bars of full green color.
if the unit will not charge in your vehicle, you might need to replace the fuse that is located at the tip of the vehicle adapter.
1. to change the fuse unscrew the black, round end piece on the vehicle power adapter and remove it. inspect the fuse to see if it is blown. If not end here.
2. if determined the fuse is blown remove the fuse (glass and silver cylinder), and replace it with a 1A fast blow fuse.
3.ensure that the silver tip is placed in the black end piece. screw on the black end piece
if the fuse isn't blown and the unit still wont charge you may have received a usb cable with your Garmin Nuvi. If you didnt recieve one any mini usb cable should do. On this model you can connect the Nuvi to a computer using a usb cable. And see if you can charge your unit through this method. *Note* that the computer must be on for the unit to be able to be charged.
If you can charge your Nuvi unit on the computer then you may have something wrong with your cars adapter. I doubt this is the problem however if the unit is able to be turned on.
If you cannot charge the unit via a car adapter (with working fuse) or a USB cable. The most likely problem is the battery is no longer accepting a charge. On the listed unit a Garmin Nuvi 265 the battery is not user replaceable. So you would have to contact Garmin to get the battery changed or see if there is a local battery store that is able to change a battery on this model unit.
If you need further assistance please feel free to follow up with a comment and i will be here to assist you. If this assisted you please rate the comment. thanks and have a great day.

Nuvi 650

Hello Grumpa1350,

There are several possible reasons why a GPS unit might not turn on. For example, there could be something wrong with the charger such as a blown fuse, bad power adapter, or defective cable connection. The internal battery inside of the GPS also might be defective or worn-out. Or, worse yet, the unit may have a more serious hardware fault.

You don't say how you are charging the unit. I'd recommend trying a different charge method. The GPS can be charged one of three ways: connection to you car via the automobile power cord, connection to your computer via a USB cable, or charging from a wall outlet using an optional AC adapter. If you are charging the unit in your car, try connecting it to your computer (or vice versa). If the GPS turns on after being charged using one method but not the other, then that pretty much tells you that the problem is with the cable or adapter being used for charging.

The Garmin NUVI 650 does not contain an internal fuse, but there is a common 3 amp fast-blow fuse located in the vehicle power cord. If you find that the problem happens when trying to charge the unit in your vehicle, then you should change this fuse and see if that corrects the issue. The fuse can be replaced by unscrewing the black round piece at the end of the cigarette lighter plug.

If the unit does not turn on regardless of what charge method you use, then the fault is likely with the GPS itself. Either the internal battery would need to be replaced or the unit would need to be serviced to correct whatever hardware fault is causing the problem.

I would recommend you contact the manufacturer before you attempt to open up the unit. Opening the case of the GPS may void your manufacturer's warranty (if the unit is still under warranty).

Best regards,
Ken

I can't charge my GPS while I am in the car

Verify that the car cigarette lighter outlet is working. Do you have something that you could plug into the lighter like a light?

With the car running plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter outlet. Does it come on without pushing the ON button? If the answer is no then there is either a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter outlet. It should come on by itself if the lighter is working. Also are you using Garmin cables and DC adapter?
