I would recommend you check BOTH elements for proper resistance prior to replacing them. If both of them are not working, the problem may actually be with the Electronic Oven Control (EOC) board. This is your clock assembly. On electric ranges, the EOC controls all the oven features. Check the resistance of the heating elements by performing the following:

- Perform a resistance check from terminal end to terminal end (where the wires connect to). You should get a high resistance reading in the Kohms range (this varies between models). If the reading is infinite, you have an open heating element. (Must be replaced).

- Second, perform a resistance reading from one terminal end to the outer shell of the heating element. You should get an infinite reading. If this reading is a low resistance or short, the element is shorted. (Must be relplaced).

NOTE: Take these readings with the wires disconnected.

You may be right, but please take the time to check both elements and let me know what you find. You may have started off with a bad element, but it could have damaged the EOC as well. I have seen this happen before. The result is an oven that still doesn't work after the homeowner replaces the defective element.

The following link explains how to replace a heating element:

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Kyle,
Usually what they mean by "hidden" element means that the bake element sits in a recessed part of the oven cavity. You only have one bake element and one broil element in the oven. Hope this helps.

My 2003 Matag range model mer5770 will no heat in bake mode. The bottem or top element wont heat although the top element will heat on broil Hi mode. Also when bake mode is on the oven control shows both...

,first make sure you have 240 volts going to the stove, the broil runs on 120 volts, the bake on 240 volts, unplug it,remove the two screws and pull out the bake element, pull off at least one wire and read it out with a meter,if it's good remove the back panel, check for burnt wires, plug it back in and where the block is or where the cord connects to the machine make sure you have 240 volts,if you do you the computer board is bad or the clock assy. part number 5701M556-60 and it's around 225 dollars on the sears site, when you call your parts store give them the full number off the machine, the number that came up was mer577oaaa.hope this helps.also when the bake is on the broil element heats up too, that's why both elements show up,if the relay is bad in the clock assy, you can't get a new relay you have to change out the whole assy.

When set to bake oven does not preheat and tempature does not increase. when set to broil oven heats

Since your oven has a separate element for bake and broil I would bet the bake element is burnt out or burnt electrical connection to the element. Make sure you disconnect all power to the range before checking.

If all your connections are solid then your controller is defective. Did you get any faults before changing the element? Does the broil (one at the top of the oven) work?

Baking element

oh bleep, right? well, if you're lucky this will get you going again. 1. disconnect power to range. 2. remove back metal cover just above range power cord (usually 5 quarter inch hex screws) 3. look for burnt off wire leading to/from bake element. If yes, 4. strip ends of broken wire and splice with ceramic wire nut if no 4. bad news. replace ERC (electronic range control) you fried something on the board. It's got the clock display and all the electronics behind it.

Broiling works but baking does not work

CHECK FOR 240VOLTS AT THE TERMINALS OF THE BAKE ELEMENT. GAIN ACCESS BY REMOVING THE BACK PANEL OF THE RANGE. SOMETIMES THE TERMINAL WILL BURN OFF OF THE WIRE GOING TO THE ELEMENT. THE WIRE WILL JUST BE HANGING THERE. BE SURE TO UNPLUG THE OVEN BEFORE REMOVING BACK PANEL. IF THE WIRE IS BURNT, REPLACE THE TERMINAL AND REATTACH TO THE ELEMENTS TERMINAL. IF THE TERMINAL IS DAMAGED, REPLACE BAKE ELEMENT.
IF THERE IS NO VOLTAGE TO THE ELEMENT, REPLACE CONTROL.
